Looking to try a RDA, something to learn and grow with?

I'm thinking about trying out a rda for something different. I'm looking primarily to flavor but some clouds can be fun.

I'm leaning toward the Magma clone as the price seems pretty good and from what I've read quality is also good.

Is this a good one to learn and grow with? I'll be learning from the ground up. How to wind coils, wicking, etc. Is there another one that would be better to learn on? I've bottom airflow is best avoided by new drippers.

I have an iPV4s coming so power shouldn't be an issue.

Any information, wire guage, coil wraps, a different rda, etc is very appreciated!

Oh the magma is definitely good to learn on. Easy build.

But there's a newer one called velocity which looks even easier;

There's also the manta if you can find one, which is top-intake-airflow, which makes it highly leak resistant.

based on those numbers alone, the velocity is looking like a best buy

I tend to think of them as pretty much interchangeable parts, they're very similar. The Magma is a good choice. I personally like the Dark Horse for both cloud and flavor, and I think the Plume Veil is excellent for flavor. I would stay away from the kind with bottom air holes below the coils. These tend to leak if you overdrip, which you certainly will, especially in the beginning.

I just looked at the Dark Horse and Plume Veil. Throw in the Magma and all three have different post arrangements. Which is the easier to learn on? Can I do a single coil build on a three post? I'm pretty sure I could do a dual on a two post?

You can certainly do a single coil build on a three post RDA, and also a dual on a two post RDA.

I recommend making a single coil, 1.0 ohm microcoil as your first attempt. 28 gauge kanthal is an excellent size to start out with, and I still use that gauge myself almost exclusively. I use 1.5 ohm single coils in my Kayfun tank, and 0.6 ohm dual coils in my Patriot dripper -- all 28 gauge simple coils.

Take baby steps at first as you learn, nothing exotic or complicated. Once your comfortable, experiment with ohms and build types if you wish.

Two main rules: Make sure you always measure your coil setup with an ohm reader before actually firing it on your mod. Routinely re-check it from time to time. A loose post screw can drop the resistance by as much as 0.5 ohms. Make sure your battery has the amps (continuous discharge rate) available for the amp draw of the coil, using an Ohm's Law calculator.

Baditude is dead on. Ive had a magma for quite some time and still use it. Easy build and a deep juice well. Single or duel 28ga works great in it

Yes, the magma has the airflow coming from below.

The velocity is more conventional, airflow comes from the side.

The manta is unconventional; it intakes air from the top and channels down to the sides where it then hits the coil from the side.

+1 for the Velocity. Awesome dripper. It has taken my top spot for flavor and versatility. And I like the fact that it doesnt leak. I also give honorable mention to the magma. The only thing with the magma is you have to hold the air flow control in place while you screw it down which can be a bit of a pain and it leaks a little. Both are two post RDA's which are very easy to build. I do like the el Cabron too. A little more difficult to build but also can put out some great flavor with decent clouds.

I drilled mine open with the ring in place; the result was the ring became locked in place which was just fine with me.

Top air flow, great flavor, doesn't leak unless upside down, enough airflow for clouds or less for flavor.

You can get a Nova n22 for ten bucks on ebay shipped from the USA. It's the magma design but more air

All RDAs that have bottom airflow (the magma) leak when you drip juice right on top of the coils. Then it drips into the airflow. If you drip it into the juice well it wont leak. N22 is the same way. I have a couple of those also. It your call but those are the easiest to build on and learn on.

I think I'm going to start with that Vector and 28 kanthal. I like the top airflow so less leaks.

It looks like it has a decent size juice well?

Should I go with cotton or rayon for wick? I've seen a couple posts that rayon is better for RDA's?

Both the DH and the PV can be set up for single coils. Most drippers can, all you have to do is adjust the air flow cap so only one set of holes is open, and put the cap on the base so the open air holes are next to the coil. The DH cap unscrews, you can set the shroud to provide the size and number of passages you want then tighten it down to lock it in place. The PV is adjusted each time you pull the cap to drip (not hard to do, really). You can build dual coils on a two post system if the post holes are big enough for 2 wires. If not, they can usually be drilled. Both the DH and the PV are pretty easy to do. Honestly I don't think a beginner will have any trouble with either.
