LOL, the store-bought tomatoes, peppers and cukes here dont taste so juicy, and I so love home-grown tomatoes. And the dandelions in my yard are so super healthy picked and thrown in the blender. Besides groceries are going up up up while taste goes down down down.

 Ummmmm...I...I'm speechless.

That's why we joined Sam's. Club. Now we buy a lot of stuff in bulk. Finding a place to store it is the problem. 8-o

jj, i'm doing something a little different this year. I'm putting my tomatoes in 4-gallon Lowe's buckets so I can move them when high winds come up. Also so I can put a tray of rock salt around them to keep off the snails.

My compost pile has grown huge, so I have plenty of wonderful dirt for my cukes and melons.

Never tried that. Let me know if they get as big.

We will put ours out soon and put this over them for awhile because it still gets pretty chilly now and then.

DH cut off the bottom. It's like they have their own little green house. :)

I don't eat the dandelions pureed. I throw them in the blender with kale, a frozen banana, coconut milk, yogurt and a pear or dates to sweeten. You cant even taste the dandelion and kale.

copied from 10 Reasons You Should Use Dandelion Greens In Your Green Smoothie - Incredible Smoothies

#1 – High in Calcium: Dandelion greens are loaded with calcium. Just one cup of chopped dandelion greens has 103 milligrams (10% of the recommended daily value) of calcium! That’s slightly more than kale! Add two to three cups of dandelion to a smoothie with calcium-rich fruits like orange, kiwi, fig or papaya and you’ll have a green smoothie that has more calcium than any dairy product!

#2 – Rich in Iron: Next to fresh parsley, dandelion greens have a high iron content. One cup contains 1.7 milligrams of iron.

#3 – Low Calories: Like all leafy greens, dandelions are low in calories. One cup of chopped dandelion greens has only 25 calories. While leafy greens are a low calorie food.

#4 – Loaded With Antioxidants: Dandelion greens are high in vitamin A in the form of antioxidant carotenoid (beta-carotene) and vitamin C. Vitamin C also helps facilitate iron absorption.

#5 – The Ultimate Detox & Cleansing Green: If your goal is detoxification and cleansing, dandelion greens should be the ones you use in green smoothies! They are said to help cleanse the liver and many detox recipes call for them.

#6 – Lots Of Minerals: Dandelion greens are rich in minerals. Besides calcium and iron, they are a good source of copper (10% RDA), manganese (8% RDA), phosphorus (5% RDA), potassium (5% RDA) and magnesium (5% RDA).

#7 – 14% Protein: Dandelion greens have more protein per serving than spinach. The greens themselves are 14% protein and contain all essential amino acids so it’s a complete protein. One chopped cup contains 1.5 grams of protein.

#8 – Multivitamin Green: Besides vitamin A as beta-carotene (186% RDA) and vitamin C (21% RDA), each cup of chopped dandelion greens are also good sources of vitamins B1 (9% RDA), B2 (11% RDA) and B6 (11% RDA), vitamin E (13% RDA) and especially abundant in vitamin K (357% RDA).

#10 – Health Benefits of Dandelion Greens: The nutrients in dandelion greens may help reduce the risk of cancer, multiple sclerosis, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration and stroke. I eat only organic produce and I find 2# tubs of organic kale, spinach and lettuce mixes for only $5 each at our Vons store. They're even pre-washed, so I buy my greens.

And then we have Farmer's Mkts here everyday in San Diego County ... may have to drive a little to get to them if one misses their local one, but they're here all around us.

All good reasons to eat them. I just can't bring myself to do it!

I am trying to do V8 juice most days and yuk yuk yuk.

I guzzle it down to get it over quickly!!

A lot of ppl eat dandelions like they do collards and chard ... lots of recipes on the web.

Try your V8 with a shot of vodka and a splash of tabasco, jj .... yummy!:)

That's a great idea, jj. Does your DH help you garden?

We just do tomatoes. :D

And yes. I do most of the weeding but usually put grass clippings down to cut that down. After the water jugs are gone, he will put up fencing and tie strings in places around the plants so they don't droop and hit the ground.

Corn we get from a local farmer who does organic, or my niece (they do pretty much everything organic. Niece and her hubby have chickens and that is where we get a lot of our eggs.

I just buy tomato cages, and they will git perfectly into the pails. I will start my herb garden next week ... lots of basil, dill, parsley and cilantro ... a little thyme and oregano.

If I weren't so busy right now, I would grow a big herb garden and then stick them in my dehydrator and then vacuum seal, but just dont have the time to strap myself to a garden.

Son and DIL are doing a garden. It will be interesting to see how that goes!

Well I got to head out and get a walk in, take a shower, throw the last load of clothes in the washer, and then get on the laptop to do some stuff.

Great to see you Sea! :)

 Actually...I've eaten a lot of dandelion greens. Most of our food we grew and raised when I was growing up. We also ate a lot of squirrel and rabbit. We were kinda poor and lived out in the sticks. I swore when I grew up I'd NEVER have a garden again. We grew everything and between picking corn and digging potatoes...don't know which was worse. We had pigs, chickens, horses and cows. The only thing I've had as an adult are horses. Well...I did hatch and raise some chickens when my daughter was growing up. But that was it. NO GARDENS! :D

Ha! Now the truth comes out Meggers. I bet the food you ate while growing up was soooo much tastier than what's in the store bins. I never ate squirrel but did eat rabbit a couple of times prepared like tuna salad ... wasn't bad at all, but I am such an animal lover that it doesn't sound appetizing to eat a cute lil bunny rabbit.

There are new painless ways of gardening now, but it's still gardening. Those green grow tubs that you don't have to water or weed from ... forget what you call them, but a few of of my friends use those and love them.

I hated throwing the dead chicken in the boiling water and pulling out its feathers ... so yuck. I understand why you would rather buy.

 I wouldn't have noticed if it did cause I'm sure I was so tired by the time I ate...I didn't care what it tasted like.
