I love black bears but they are mighty dangerous. They don't back off if you play dead, just start eating you, so you might as well give it your best shot at fighting and trying to scaring it off.
My brother knows someone who was out in the woods with one of his friends. A black bear got after them. He ran into some bushes. His friend climbed a tree. The bear went right after his friend and got him. Killed him. During the killing his friend took the opportunity to run away and luckily escaped. So, running, hiding, all acceptable, but don't climb a tree!
Wow, but I wouldn't think to climb a tree anyway.

Hi, Sun....what a grizzly story. Whoops....wrong kinda bear.
I've been dealing with a plumber tonight. Every line stopped up. Sewage backed up into my tub. Next week we are having a guy come out that jet blows the pipes. I had to wait 7 hours to go to the bathroom!

I did not know black bears attacked unless it was female with cubs....we were told in Alaska that they are very timid and avoid people as much as possible. That we were in no danger as long as there were no cubs. Sounds like the guys came across a sick one or a rabid one or really scared.
