I got my new 510 protege last night. Two days of waiting, rather then the two weeks i was expecting, awesome. Definitely seems to hit better and taste stronger then my basic 510. At least with a broken in atty..
Loving the battery life so far, and it's generally just pleasant to vape on. I'm enjoying old flavors i had lying around, that i had long since dismissed.

That said.. I have been using the reservoir blue plug mod on my 510 carts. On a regular 510 battery i can vape that basically till it's dry with no problems. I've noticed several times over the past evening and morning, when i would get that burnt hot taste, that in my mind signals the need for more juice. I open the cart, tweeze out the plug, and lo and behold: still plenty of liquid. Drip some directly onto the atty coil and the plug, and it's ok again for a while.. But i don't seem to be able to vape it dry anymore.

I know the protege and prodigy, etc. are designed as dripping devices, and that's fine when i'm at home. But i spend an hour to two hours a day depending on traffic driving to and from work. Hard to drip on the highway (though not impossible........) unless traffic is reeeeally bad. I Spend large chunks of my drive home at 80 mph, at which speed dripping seems like a dangerous idea. Hence i've been using modded cartridges. But i didn't even make it work today on a freshly filled cart. I vape a lot, but not THAT much.

I do tend to take long, multi breath drags. Could this be a problem with the protege? maybe it's running hotter then i'm used to?

This is nit picky stuff. Overall i love the heck out of this product... Puresmoker, you guys rock.

I don't know anything about the Protege or how exactly you are using the blue foam but I had the exact same problem with my 510.

I use the blue foam with nothing behind it. I pushed it in just a tiny bit too much. Twice in a row. It was driving me crazy. Then I pulled the foam out a bit and it works again. A real dooh! moment.

Hope yours is that simple.

I find when dripping in a protege I use more juice than in my 510, using the exact same atty. More power gives us more vapor which uses more juice. I use about 50% more in my protege here, but drip less often. In a stock 510 I used 2 drops, in a protege I use 3.

I would surmise that if you can tweak your plug to allow for more/faster flow (withought flooding) then it will still work out for you. I do realize there is a fine line with a blue plug between working well, working perfectly, and flooding so good luck there.

Downsides might be having seperate plugs for 510 and protege, telling them apart if you do, and ofcourse tweaking a plug to suit the protege in the first place.

Get a cartomizer adapter and cartomizers for driving.

Lucky, what are those? The 901 atomizers I bought with my Protege have a high 'bridge' and I think are drip only, so it must be a cartomizer type of atomizer?

My drips would definitely last me an hour on my drive into work, but I take very small puffs. Definitely can not drip and drive (!)

Whenever you are working with cart mods you have to realize that adjustments may need to be made for changes in battery performance or juice types. The 14500 battery in the protege will deliver more power than a stock 510 battery. Since I don't know what juice you are using I assume it is the same juice you used with the stock 510?

The stronger battery is wanting the cart to supply more juice than the cart is currently designed to produce. You may need to change the size of the plug to loosen it up and allow more juice to flow (wick faster). Any mod will usually require an adjustment in the other components so that they work better together.

i'm using the same ecopure krystal and flavourart mix i've been using... i thought maybe i'd try some older PG i had lying around and that seems to do the same thing..

i think i'll have to try shortening the plug. i've actually been doing Kristin's scotchbrite and straw mod.. i've thinking the Eclypse mod will have to be tried eventually anyway.. Vaping turns out to be almost as tweak-y as my stereo setup.. Sometimes you just want to play music/vape.. ah well, if i didn't want to tweak till perfection i suppose i wouldn't be here...

i'll try all of your suggestions.

Actually i like the old JC all PG juice much better then i did on the BLUCIG or straight 510.. the 18mg on the JC and my Kyrystal mix, seem to hit as hard as the 24mg ecopure used to.. it terms of nicotine rush.. I haven't gotten twitchy like this since i first started dripping. Is that normal with the protege? i can always drop the nicotine levels back down.. i was doing 12mg for a while since that's what the turkish silvers i used to chain smoke listed on their packs, but it just didn't do it for me..
any thoughts?

High bridge aren't only for dripping, you can use a cart in them. Matter of tastes ;)

Cartomizers are a cart/atty all in one. Atty sticks up vertically and 'filler' is wrapped around outside. They would be nice/easy for long distance driving as they hold loads of juice without flooding/leaking and you can just screw the used one off, new one on and keep going.

Actually, good thought for long drives hmmmmmm.... :p

I have the Protege with 901 atty. For the first 2 weeks I dripped even on my long commute. Not a problem in the daytime, but dangerous at night especially on my run up the mountain.

I am now using a nylon mesh from the craft store. Tulle, it cost me less than $.30 for a foot long piece 6 inches wide. The mesh is larger than PTB and works well in the 901. I can get 10 or 12 drops in without flooding. I still have to top it off if I am in the car for too long, but much easier than dripping while driving.

I also have taken the plug out of the 901 tip that had a small hole. Now the tip is open for a smoother draw and less juice on the lips. I thought I would get more lip drip, but that is not the case for some reason.

personally from my experience with the high bridge 801 atty i got from PS seems to work better for carts. i figure because the bridge pokes into the cart more... i'm talking about Normal carts with Normal filler here though.

Also the 510 is from what i've been told and confirmed through usage... is more about Throat hit AND flavor...

The 901 is more about flavor, less harshness. Either get the 901 adapter for your protege or you can goto AltSmoke : The Yeti, JOYE510, DSE901 and More! and get a 510 to 901/Kr808 adapter... the KR808 adapter is a better idea because then you can use a 901 OR a cartomizer.

From my experiences with cartomizers... lets say they're collecting dust till i get a 5v mod. the flavor is awesome... the puffing over and over for a good puff Sucks... and the throat hit is more like that of a 510.

801 on a protege is underpowered. (no offense Steve)... but 3.7v creates a cold vapor and only some flavor, with not a whole lot of vapor.

the joye306 is actually an awesome little monster that fits on the 510 adapter/batteries. it's dip friendly but doesn't last long... it's actually more like a 901 to me.

This is all subject to debate, and personal preference if you don't like a lot of throat hit, i'm guessing don't get a 5v PV just yet, and try the 901, or even the 801. I have an 801 adapter for the protege if you wanna trade for the 510. i wont be using it and have to put all kinds of adapters on it to get to my preferred atty.

i hope this helps, which is all everyone here wants to do.

I have been using the Blue Foam method with my VP2. The VP2 runs the same size battery as the Protege. Here is a video I did of the blue foam mod. I have to give eclypse credit for the original idea. This video is my method of using the cart mod.

YouTube - Marineland Filter Cart MOD

For those of you that would want to try the plug/slug with the blue foam as its far superior to just being lazy and tossing some random loose foam in the cart.. then head to my link in my signature.

BTW.. for wanting to save time with your carts, you sure would save alot of time just using the plug/slug then sittin there waitin for that juice to sink in the cart of that heavy (dense) populated foam cart your using.

Dont worry, your not alone. Theres atleast one other thats still looking for a better fix and he too just eyeballed it and didnt try to follow the directions.

You can cut out a crap load of plugs/slugs in no time flat with the right tools and they last a very long time.. hell i'm still using the same slugs i cut in the begining hehe.

Next time you make the video.. Please tell people to wash the foam first!

I'll have to get off my lazy but soon and make a video showing how easy this is.. no time till after the holidays.
