We met on my first day of high school - he was a senior and a football player. I was trying to get into his school (a specialty high school - he majored in machine
shop, but there were many specialties available and it was hard to get in) - I scored well but there were too many ahead of me and I was going to have to go to my neighborhood high school which was pretty rough.
Anyway, he showed interest, he knew my next door neighbor - she went there too. A couple of days passed and my next door neighbor told me he was interested and I asked her to call him for me. She did and the next time I saw him was at a football game (against MY school) - we started dating (you know in those days it was splitting an order of fries and 2 cokes).
All the girls at his high school were mad because they couldn't date this football player. Then it occurred to DH that if I was a freshman - I was only 14

, but he was hooked - he took quite a ribbing from those cheerleaders though.
When he graduated he took a job at a factory a couple of miles from my house. The high school I went to was having some problems and he changed his shift so he could take me to school and pick me up from school. Shortly after that my mom and I moved back into the suburbs.
One New Years Eve (I was 16) his car broke down right after he left his house to come see me - we lived a good 8 or so miles apart at that point - and it was snowing, I mean SNOWING. He walked all the way to my house to see me and then had to walk all the way home.
We married when I was 17; he was 20 and immediately left town (believe it or not the Holiday Inn in Erie, PA has a honeymoom suite!). Family interference was immense (our parents bet on us - whether we'd make it or not - his mother gave us a year and my mother gave us 5). We were married 32 years.
