Once I learned how cheaply e-liquid can be made (about a month after I started to vape), I set about learning about the craft. I'm still learning new tricks or tips.

I also have dumped a few batches out because they were too weird even for me. I have yet to mix a tobacco flavor I like. I came close one time as the taste almost made me ill. It was so close to the taste of an analog that it brought up some bad memories of being a smoker that I almost became ill. I added some menthol and gave it away and haven't made a tobacco flavor since.

I had thought that in order to be a "real" flavorist, one would have to know how to mix all kinds of flavors well. The hell with that idea.

Man, I can appreciate what you are saying about tobacco flavors. I started vape in January and have sampled a ton of them, some premade and some DIY. Seriously, a ton of them in DIY from INA, FA, TFA, VZ, etc., and a host of pre-made from a variety of others. I laugh now when my notes say things like " tastes like it was scraped from the barn floor" But I am starting to enjoy some now, finally, and all DIY. :) If you haven't tried French Pipe yet, please do. I bought the flavor from EJC, VZ, FE, and INA and they are all virtually the same - GOOD! I have become attached to VZ as I really like some of their other flavors too, like Honey Flu Cured, and Island. At this moment I'm vaping what is said to be a clone of Dragon Fire from HHV I believe. Here's the recipe and it is wonderful.

2% VZ Honey Flu Cured Tobacco
2% VZ Cigar
1.25% VZ Island Tobacco
0.25% TFA Honey

For most everything else I have swung to FA flavors and they are great.

I'm really focused on developing a good Banana Nutbread now. Sure would appreciate a recipe if anyone has a good one.

I buy a couple bottles of (reasonably priced) juice every month or so just to support my local vape shops. I still like to hang out at the tasting bar and sample new stuff. :)

I generally end up giving store-bought juice away to friends who don't DIY after I've vaped a tank or two of it. Most of it has entirely too much flavoring in it for my sensitive palate and my 15 watt cotton-wicked kayfun mechs.

Boba's is the only juice I regularly buy for personal consumption, only because I can't make anything close enough to satisfy when I get the urge for it. I use it sparingly compared to my own mixes, though, so it lasts a long time!

Got 5 steeping that I made up last night. One is my creation that is my daily vape the past 2 months. I love my Rootbeers! :)

Oh yeah, rootbeer! I had some TFA root beer that I made which was OK, nothing spectacular. On a whim, I picked up a bottle of Watkins extracts root beer at WalMart and mixed up a bottle at 15%. Wow! It is really really good! I also like Watkins cherry as a stand alone flavor, at 15%.

One of my all day vapes is a Capella mix, strawberry cheesecake, 10% NY cheesecake and 5% sweet strawberry. It needs a week to steep. I always get remarks about how good it smells when I am out and about.

I'm getting about 30 flavors from TFA and Capella today, so I will be mixing some up!

I find that most pre-made juice is very sweet and flat on flavor. I can't say for sure if it is bias on my part, but the stuff I make is better than what I was buying.

Like many others I have a couple of vendor flavors I like, but also have many that I make that I really like!

My favorite morning vape is a very simple mixture of carmel and honey. Smells like a bakery and goes great with coffee. It is amazing how simple a juice can be and still be very, very good!

At the individual component level?

It's a single flavoring, so I have no idea..

You'll have to ask the flavoring manufacturer -- and I'm sure you'll get crickets chirping..

Ooops, I'm sorry for not being more clear. Who is the maker of that flavor, like Capella's or Flavor West, and at what % are you mixing it?

I tried a gazillion different vendor juices before I discovered DIY. Most of them were incredibly disappointing, except for some from Five Pawns, which I loved but were too pricey for regular vaping! Since discovering DIY and finding some fantastic recipes (thanks, HIC and others), I rarely feel the need to try ready made juice - I love most of what I make, and find the vast majority of vendor juice extremely overflavored for my taste;)

I mix 5Pawns Gambit with DIY Apple Pie ... I just love this stuff ... I've re-filled the same tank daily for the past 2 months.

Are you making a Gambit type clone? Or stretching the Gambit that you buy and then mixing it with Apple Pie that you DIY? Would appreciate your recipe if you are doing the whole thing DIY. Thanks.

I've seen 2 or 3 different site on the internet with clone recipes/threads of Gambit.

I may try that ... What section of WalMart did you find the Watkins 'root beer' extract in?

Thanks,

I am still sticking to tobacco flavors. I have tried many different non-tobacco kinds and nothing does it for me like a liquid that tastes like a menthol cigarette. That's what I smoked for over 25 years. I kept about 5 premium store bought tobacco flavors from before I started DIY. I use them to compare to what I am making.

Now that I have a little experience, I routinely make e-liquid that tastes better {some, much better!} than anything I ever bought from a store for a small fraction of the price. I doubt that I will EVER vape anything but DIY recipes again. And I thank everyone here in the ECF DIY forum for freely sharing their know-how. This place RULES!

Can you share any recipes for a menthol tobacco? My wife has not yet given up her Salems and I keep trying to find a vape for her, but so far unsuccessfully. After 55 years I switched to vape in January. Some VZ tobacco flavors are my favorites, Old Captain, French Pipe, etc but I keep experimenting with other stuff like Cookie and Nutbread.

Glad to share. The tobaccos that work best for menthol {to me} are those with JUST tobacco and little else. Let me get my notes.......

Here are three winners for adding menthol to that are easy to make:

Hangsen RY1 9% + EM 1% or Hangsen Turkish 9% + EM 1%....or Hangsen Highway 9% + 2% AP

For menthol flavor, I add 1.5 drops per ml of finished juice. For example, for a 30 ml batch, I add 45 drops.

Another one I mentholate is TFA's RY4 Double @ 7.5% + 1% AP. This one has pronounced vanilla and caramel notes.

I recently discovered Inawera flavors. They have a great additive called DNB Flavor that smells like a dirty ashtray {!} and I add as much as one drop per ml of finished juice to ALL of the above. It adds ashy authenticity to any tobacco flavor.

Inawera's S'Camel or Inawera Blend or Flue Cured@ 4% with some tobacco absolute mix + DNB drops + menthol are just crazy good.

For the actual menthol, TFA has menthol crystals dissolved in PG that works as it should.

I seem to mix at higher concentrations than some. If you want to try any of these, start low with flavorings and work up! :) shoot me a private message if you need more details.
