A kit that may be helpful for modders / experimenters.

Based on an LM317 voltage regulator.

LM317 - 3-Terminal Adjustable Regulator

Kit of parts with circuit board. Can be changed to output 4.4v or whatever by changing one or two resistors or adding a zener diode (see the LM317 datasheet).

Active Robots - Sparkfun Breadboard Power Supply - UK

Could be made adjustable over a desired output voltage range.

Suitable for mods with 2 batteries (6v+) or usb where you would prefer a lower voltage for your atomizer.

Nice find kinabaloo. Should work very well for experimentation given its large Vin range.

Too bad the LM317 has such a high voltage drop out. Someone should make one of these with an LDO (hint to TI).

There is this one LM1086 - 1.5A Low Dropout Positive Regulators

which i believe is compatible and has a lower dropout.

The unit is a little big for most mods, but could be a nice desktop experimenting unit.

That's what I was thinking. Just plug it into just about any wall wart and away you go.

Indeed, And it's so much easier to build with a circuit board.

Add a pot with carefully selected resistors that form the voltage selection and one has a 3.5v - 6v (say) supply.
