Interesting. I had no idea what it was until I read the wiki page. I was at first thinking magnetic stirrer? What like using my telescoping magnet tool that I use when working on the car to stir juice? Hmm... for what benefit? LOL

But that device looks interesting, and would make a good mixer. Might look into one for juice and drinks :)

I know a vendor who used to use one long before ultrasonic cleaners became the norm. Was using a cordless drill myself to do the same thing as a magnetic stirrer without the magnet. Took a paint can opener and used the flat part to cradle the bottle with a thick rubber band to hold it without it spinning and snapping the band. It worked for up to 50ml plastic but to be safe I would not dare attempt with glass. Decided to get something different for high speed mixing in glass and the Norpro mini mixer fits the bill on the cheap cheap.

Some have used magnetic stirrers here. There are a few post just do a search. Heat is one component of high speed steeping and the other is stirring and a magnetic stirrer will do both. But the difference between a magnetic stirrer and a UC is the high rate of stirring via UC radio waves which makes steeping faster then an MS.

I have been using a magnetic stirrer for about 9 months. Bought it off ebay for a song. It really does not speed steep like a, ultrasonic cleaner does. However I now use both. I would be lost without my magnetic stirrer. I use it for mixing bases before splitting up into smaller batches too add flavors. I also use it on some stubborn tobaccos with an erlenmeyer flask without a cover, after the UC, to add a little breathing and extra stirring. I don't use heat, I have a thing about high vg content and nicotine with high heat reacting! But to each his own!
If you want heat put you flask in hot water for a while then back on the stirrer.

There are a bunch of DIY videos on making your own with a computer fan and magnets from old hard drives! You can also get a decent used one for around $35 if your patient. You don't need and industrial strength one. Variable speed is all you need.

Thanks for the input. I am all about DIY.
