I'm also a Veteran. The military is about tradition the male pronoun is the default in the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and most other DOD (Dept. Of Defense) documents. No offense to females and it is changing slowly. Uncle Sam prolly won't become Aunt Samantha though!
