It all depends on what flavor(s) you use. 5-15% is a good starting guess for single-flavor mixes, but sometimes you'll be down even lower than that, like 1.5 percent or so. Some brands are stronger than others, and some flavors are stronger than others within a single brand. You'll just have to experiment. Then, there are the "recipes" that use more than one flavor. Some recipes have individual flavors at half a percent or less, and some of them have combined flavoring totals of 25% or more.

Start small. Maybe 10ml batches would be a good starting point. If it turns out you don't like the mix, you're just going to end up pouring it down the drain, so you don't want to waste too much on a bad batch. If you do like it, it's easy enough to make more after you figure that out. Many people (myself included) make the initial mistake of just picking some flavors that sound good, and then asking "what can I make with all of these?" Instead, it's usually recommended that you find some proven recipes that look tasty to you, and buy the specific flavors needed for those recipes. I've tried a handful of recipes myself; some good, some okay, some not-so-good-at-all. What kind of flavor profiles do you like in the juice you're buying now?

Also note that most flavors are suspended in a PG base, and so are counted towards the PG total. For example if you make a mix that's 15% flavor and 85% "80/20 mix" then your end result won't be 80/20 once you've combined them. It will be more like (assuming the "80" is VG) 68/32. Perhaps you'd be best off getting pure PG and pure VG instead of a pre-mixed ratio. Otherwise, making different recipes with different flavor amounts is going to result in different ratios in the final mix, and you won't be able to adjust the ratio except by adjusting the flavor amounts. But if you get each one separately, then it's easy to add 15% flavor and 5% PG to one batch, or 10% flavor and 10% PG to a different batch (and 80% VG in both cases) and still end up with 80/20 in either case.

Again, it depends on what flavors you are using. You do know how "percents" work, right? As an example, here's a simple "strawberry cream" recipe I found on another site. It uses 6% Strawberry and 8% Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (both are TFA or "The Flavor Apprentice" brand flavors), for a total of 14% flavor. In a 30ml batch, that works out to 4.2ml flavor, combined (14% of 30ml is 0.14*30=4.2 ml). Here's a breakdown:

6% Strawberry TFA (1.8ml, counts as "PG")
8% Vanilla Bean Ice Cream TFA (2.4ml, counts as "PG")
6% PG (1.8ml) [Total of all flavors + PG = 20% or 6ml]
80% VG (24ml)
----------
100% TOTAL (30ml) -- 80%VG / 20%PG

...if you're doing it with an 80/20 mix instead, it looks something like this:

6% Strawberry (1.8ml, counts as "PG")
8% VBIC (2.4ml, counts as "PG")
86% "80/20 mix" (25.8ml, counts as 20.64ml "VG" [68.8% of total] and 5.16ml "PG" [17.2% of total])
----------
100% TOTAL (30ml) -- 68.8% VG / 31.2% PG
[EDIT: That's if your 80/20 means 80vg/20pg. If you meant 80pg/20vg instead, then the total would be 82.8%PG / 17.2% VG.]

The PG/VG ratios are off in this second example, because while you STARTED with an 80/20 mix, you then altered it by adding in some PG-based flavoring which threw off the ratio. If you want to start with 80/20, and end up with 80/20, then whatever you add has to also be in the ratio of 80/20. Instead, you're adding 0/100 to the mix, which skews the numbers. This is why I said you should get some pure PG and VG instead of using the 80/20 mix, since you won't be able to add flavor to it that way and still end up with the ratio you desire.

Flavors come in all different strengths. You just need to experiment.
The best advice you were given is start small. Lets say start with 10ml's of VG/PG base and add 5% flavoring (Learn to use percentages) and get yourself an ejuice calculator.

A good (Free) calculator would be this one.

eJuice Me Up - Best eJuice Calculator

An example of a 10ml mix at 5% would be

9.5ml's of base (95% base)
.5ml's of flavoring (5% flavoring)

Then you adjust the flavoring up or down from there in 1% increments until it taste right to you.

The reason to start small is so you don't waste materials experimenting with big 30ml batches.

I've written many blogs on DIY to help you get started so have a look.
