Despite the relatively cheaper cost of the ingredients I am wondering how much potential there is to save given the amount of trial and error that would be involved. Question(s): Those of you who make your own, did it take you while to nail something that you liked? Is there a resource for any good starting points that can be tweaked to your liking? Can you make stuff that holds up to some of the better ones you have bought?
Tremendous potential to save money. Local shops sell 10mL of e-liquid for $7.99. That's $.80 per mL. My mixes generally cost about $.07 per mL.
If I dumped half of my mixes as un-vapable, my cost skyrockets to $.14 per mL. I'd have to mess up an awful lot to approach $.80 per mL.
I've nailed quite a few mixes that my friends and I LOVE, some within the first week of DIY. These are all-day-vapes for me and my crew, and we prefer them to store-bought e-liquids. That's what you want from DIY. It's incredibly satisfying when months pass, and you've been vaping nothing but your own mixes. "Hey man, can I get some more of your Strawberry Shortcake? Here's a few bucks." - yeah, that's nice too.
There's a little cost upfront for equipment when beginning DIY. I would encourage you not to skimp here. If you have nice, accurate measuring equipment (or the financial means to upgrade from a bare-bones setup, once you try it out and like it), your mixes will be scalable and reproducable.
It's easy to spend a lot of money on flavorings too. Concentrate on a few flavors that you'll like when getting started. Let your flavor library grow slowly and organically.
Starting point is gonna depend upon what you like. Put 4 drops of LorAnn Peach into 5mL of base (whatever PG/VG and nic strength you prefer), shake well, and try it out the next morning. If your dropper is smaller than mine (not implying anything here!), you might need more. It's just a starting point.
