Hoosier,

The FDA stands for Food and Drug Administration. They are responsible for regulating ANYTHING sold as fit for human consumption.

This is from Wikipedia: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, one of the United States federal executive departments. The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications), vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices (ERED), veterinary products, and cosmetics....

Pete

Um, yeah, Pogo's famous quote has never been so applicable. Thanks, Pete, for the education. It has been more enlightening than you can imagine.

The vendors you like are probably adding bits of flavoring that you haven't considered yet...

This is something that I learned Very Early when I started doing DIY.

That retail e-Liquids are Very Seldom made up of just One Single Flavoring.

I equate this to making Spaghetti Sauce. If you just add some Garlic to a couple of cans of Tomato paste it doesn't really taste like Spaghetti Sauce. But now throw in some Basil and maybe some Tarragon and your sauce starts to take form. Now some Oregano and maybe a glug of Olive Oil and your starting to get there.

My first attempts at e-Liquid DIY were for Fruit Flavors. How hard could it be to make Watermelon? Just add Watermelon Flavoring until it was strong enough, Right?

Well my DIYs were OK but the just didn't taste like the Retail e-Liquids that I liked. My DIY's tasted Flat. So I thought, Why not try to Britten it up?

I tried adding a Drop or Two of Pineapple and maybe a Drop of Cherry or Orange to my Watermelon Recipe. Bingo. Now I had a Watermelon that tasted like Watermelon but had some Complex under tones to it. Much more Retail Tasting DIY.

The Key is you have to go Slow adding these Secondary Flavors. You have to give the DIY Mixture time to Age (I hate the term "Steep") before tasting it.

And you HAVE TO KEEP DETAILED AND ACCURATE RECORDS OF EVERYTHING YOU ADD OR ALTER TO A RECIPE.

This last one is where many people fall down. They get a DIY tasting good but they Can't Remember Exactly what they did or how much they used.

hmm well I know it got syrup concentrate lol - but other from that it's to explain - like this one Kentucky Maplewood Blend , they are absolutely lovely! taste

Ugh, can't help you there... While I have maple syrup flavoring, and use it, I gag on anything that gets close to tasting like maple sap. I had hoped it was more like maple wood sawdust which I find much more pleasing to the palate.
