Making your own coils....

How do you know what "wattage" your own coils can go up to? Its something I am keen to have a try at but before I go out and stary buying tools and a rebuildable tank and things I though I would do some homework? I am assuming its down to the wire you use, would it just be the thickness of the wire? the number of coils? anyone know?

Many thanks.

I have a very popular app that I use that has the best rating percentage in the Google Play Store. There is a regular and a pro version. In the screenshots of the app I did a kanthal 24 gauge 6 wrap dual coil 3mm inside diameter build and on the bottom it calculated the wattage that my coil is good for. This app is highly recommended.

My coils only "go up to" the wattage that tastes the best. Don't let pre-made coil packaging distort your thinking. Build a nice safe build and start with low wattage. Creep it up until you hit paydirt!
These coil manufacturers stating these ridiculous ranges is comical.

The power level you want to use will dictate the coil. Higher power levels will need heavier lower resistance wire. Lower power levels will need a lighter guage higher resistance wire. Use steam engine to model your proposed build and power level.
Ultimately it's not about the numbers, but about getting in the right ballpark and then using the your brain and mouth to ascertain what is right for you.

Thank you guys, I know what you mean with the "guide wattage ranges" The Q2 coil I am running states 55-65 watts is the "best range but I get nice clouds and brilliant taste at around 45 watts running on normal mode on my Alien . I am really liking this MOD so far so will just play around when I get the rebuildable tank and just stick to good quality wire and high grade organic cotton and just step up watt by watt untill I get the best taste and take it from there. I usually start off at 40 watts and creep up from there, the stock coils are usually ranging from 0.15 to 0.40 ohms resistance so somthing between this range willl be where I am starting.. perhaps 0.15 to 0.25 will be a good place to start off. thanks for the heads up and I will get that app for sure.

I like the Q2 best as well at 40W. When you say you start out at 40W, is that after priming and breaking in the coil? A brand new coil, even if primed, isn't going to be all that happy starting at 40W if that's around your actual vape power. If it's your own coil and wicking that you prime yourself before mounting, you can start on the higher side, but even there, until you see it wicking well, I start a bit lower than where I know I'll end up.
