I had silica with my starter kit, scrapped that with a swiftness once I learned about how bad it is for your health. Went to some cotton balls and rolling it up thin for wickin which was good, but had 0 tolerance for dry hits. Everytime I got a dry hit I had to rewick or be stuck with the nasty burnt cotton taste.

Recently I spent 3 bucks for a lifetime supply(seems like it anyways) of cheesecloth. OMG it's amazing, much higher tolerance and recovery from dry hits. And it doesn't have the weird sweetish flavor you get from regular cotton balls or cotton makeup pads. and it's TONS easier to thread through your already built coil if you just need to rewick, without removing your coil.

I just rip the threads apart stack em all together and straighten up the edges with some scissors. then fold a single thread together and thread it through my microcoil and stick the bunch of threads through the remaining loop and pull it through. (I got this method from something I saw somewhere around ECF here, don't remember where and by who though sorry). It wicks well enough for my 1.5ohm 3.7-4v microcoil with ribbon kanthal, so I'm truly in love with it.

If this is for your first RBA/RDA, you should probably buy a small amount of silica wick. It really is one of the easiest to learn how to make your first coil. Ekowool, which is a hollow braided silica has also become quite popular. This would be another decent option.

As with the above posters, I generally get my wick and wire off of ebay. It is generally cheaper than vaping vendors.

how bad is the silica, and would ekowool be just as bad?

Silica particles could be broken down and inhaled, theres a huge thread on it. Ekowool is a better quality silica and is very durable.

But, I use peaches n creme cotton yarn boiled twice in distilled water for at least 10 minutes then air dried. They are about 3mm thick. I triple or quadruple fold for a 9mm or 12mm wick. I use that for sub ohm though. A two fold will probably work otherwise.

Silicosis is only a concern with fragments smaller than 10nm, any half decent silica wick won't even have fragments anywhere near that small. It also takes prolonged exposure to large amounts of these fragments.

The blanket fear of silica is unwarranted.

well...it tastes like doodie too..
