well I got a quick simple guide to cotton cheesecloth on page 1 of this thread. for cotton balls you just rip a small piece off and twist and pull it until it looks the right size for your wick needs
I usually twist it up super tight then corkscrew it through my coil, then once i have it positioned untwist it a bit to lock it in so it doesn't move.
