Maybe it's NOT the liquid. Maybe it's the ProTank?!

All over the place
I see (way more often that I care to) vapers talking about their liquid tasting "burnt," "plasticy," "metallic," "off," "muted," "muted," "muted," etc., and then it's followed with the words: in my ProTank.

Look, I've used a ProTank (not mine, but my cousin has one), and every time he brings it over to my house (frequently), I taste just about all of those adjectives I initially listed (even when he thinks it's working great). People can vape how they want, and far be it from me to cast aspersion on a device, but damn!
Seeing as the popularity of those little boogers are so high right now, I think I will scurry along.

Just sayin': Maybe it's the ProTank!

I'd agree, especially with muted with stock anything on a protank, 1 or 2.

I've found though, that after I've rebuilt it with a microcoil and cotton wick that it makes a world of difference. Once you get a wrap that works well and a wick that's the right amount to pull in enough juice but not enough to flood (takes some practice), I'd put it right up there with most of the RBAs I've used. It's not anywhere near as good as an RDA, but it's a lot more convenient to me. The difference in quality makes me wonder why there aren't replacement coils on the market that are already set up like this, from Kanger or 3rd party.

I tend to run a 10 wrap of 28ga Kanthal A1 at ~1.3Ω

I would respectfully disagree, It most likely isn't the Protank, it is the inexperience. Rubber? Plastic? I am thinking the voltage is too high, they are burning it dry, juice level too low, bad quality juice, etc. Perhaps it is an old head or they have been changing flavors without cleaning it. Maybe hitting too hard or long (smoker's drag). Muted flavor? Many of the previous issues can cause that. I was shocked how much better my Protank 2 performed when I learned how to properly use it. I have to agree that it has been my own inexperience that has caused all the bad experience and wasted money that I have incurred in vaping to date. Learn to use your gear properly, get good quality juices from good vendors and the experience, even with inexpensive gear, will be amazingly good. Just my two cents. end rant, thank you for your patience.

I'm with OlDog, ever since I got my first Protank I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of flavor I was getting. Sure, occasionally it floods when I don't keep it topped off, but I own both versions and they remain my most used devices.

I'm even comparing the exact same juice in Protank II versus Optimus-S RDA right now and quite honestly, I feel like the Protank gives more flavor, albeit slightly less vapor production. Can't wait to try rebuilding a micro coil with either cotton or SS+Cheesecloth. I'm wondering if maybe the Protank just works better on certain PVs than others? Could be some truth in there.

Either way, if you like it, great, use it! If you don't, find something with a better fit.

I have what I think is the second generation Protank 1 and I have to agree. I hadn't been using it because the flavor was muted for me AND it was simply too big and heavy on my C-twists and itazte, yesterday my SID arrived and I brought it back out and filled with my favorite juice. Again little to no flavor and I tried different watt settings, including the same setting I use on the itazte and still very muted flavor. I've been using one of the I Clear16 clearos that came with the itazte with this juice and getting twice the flavor so I think I'm going to try the I Clear 30s and see how they do.

If there is a special way to hit a Protank that will make it give me the same flavor please tell me about it. :)

This.

People should know by now how inconsistent products are. Whether it be cartos from the same box, or Protank heads from the same manufacturer. You know why RBAs are so awesome? Because YOU make the coil and YOU make the wick to YOUR specifications that work best for YOU. The Protank is no different. Once YOU make the coils/wick that work best for YOU, it really is a solid tank.

Anyone see a common theme here? Not one person vapes the same flavor, at the same pg/vg mixture, with the same nic level, from the same delivery device, on the same battery device, at the same power. There are so many variables that a stock coil head simply cannot work with them all. Whatever YOUR combo may be, YOU have to take the initiative to figure out how to make it work for YOU.

Well if that is the case then maybe they should say up front that it's only really great IF you make your own coils. Some of us either don't want to or can't because of physical limitations. :) I'm not trying to be argumentative at all, just saying that we don't all have the same desires or abilities yet the Protank is pushed at all of us as the BEST tank there is. I really would prefer to hear them saying that it is the best tank IF.

I used to wonder this too, but I recently discovered the answer. It's because the cotton can burn if it's not primed with liquid first and the companies can't risk the liability.

I definitely see what you're saying... Sadly, as advanced as vaping is at this point, it is still in the infant stages of equipment. As vapers figure out the best coil/wick setups, manufacturers are taking note and incorporating these into the latest and greatest revisions of their products. It will eventually be fool proof (more or less), but for now, it is us that seems to guide this thing along. Just hang in there with us in the meantime...

Can you say rubber grommet burning, when you get it too hot it happens. I finally figured out that's the taste that never goes away once it happens. I have disbanded my protanks. Muted flavor is from poor wicking leading to dry hit which leads to burning the grommet. If bubbles aren't rising every 4 vapes your havering muted taste and it will burn it faster too.
