Hi All,
Just thought I'd share something that I came across last night...
I'd made a few coils before, but that was only to see if I could make a coil that actually works. So, I decided to spend about an hour practicing micro coil making last night, since I'm very new to the procedure. I had a bunch of, what I consider, failures at first. Ohms a little too high for my liking, funny shapes, etc. Someone in another post had suggested torching the coil after it was made, and crimping it together with some pliers in order to get it tighter - taking the spring out of it. I got the idea to anneal the wire (burn it with a lighter) BEFORE I started wrapping, to take the spring out of it. It made a TON of difference. On my second attempt, I had a 2.0ohm micro coil, using 7 wraps of 32g Kanthal. I still torched it again and used the pliers, but it held very tightly that time. The Kanthal that I ordered from Temco says that it's "annealed", so I didn't think that I'd need to anneal it myself, but it turns out that you do.
Also, I've been touting this for a couple days now in several posts about cotton wick: I've been using butcher's twine as my wick material in my EVODs and Protank Mini. I'm not sure how well it works in top coil assemblies, or rba/rda's, but it's absolutely amazing in BBC's. I haven't tried cheese cloth yet, as others have suggested, but I have tried the #6 Peaches & Cream yarn from Wally-Warts. IMO, the butcher's twine blows it away.
