Hi Ladies, I want to post what is going on in my life. Classwife knows some of this and will take care of our forum if I do go AWOL. I have been debating about sharing all this..it's a bit much.

As some of you know my husband had triple by pass 13 years ago. He also has C.O.P.D.. his back was injured in a couple of warehouse accidents...not that we knew there was serious permanent injury until years later. We cannot have surgery done because he has a void or cyst in his spine called a syrinx, it's a birth defect we found out about 10 years ago. Any surgery on his spine can cause the cyst to rupture spilling spinal and brain fluid into his spine. The chances that surgery will help is 50/50 and the chances the surgery will cause harm..60/40.

The back pain and injury has caused nerve damage. he is shaking and can't feel his feet anymore.

He also had part of his descending colon removed because of Diverticulitis.
he has been taking Tylenol (acetaminophen) in massive doses as well as other pain meds that have to be picked up in person. That doesn't count all the cholesterol and other heart meds, meds for his colon, 19 meds in all multiples of many of the 19.

So you would think..good grief, enough is enough! Nope.
Last Friday we went to the V.A.. they had some testing back for us. Mike has cirrhosis of the liver (no he doesn't drink..at least for the last 20 years) They said it was most likely caused by the Tylenol and other drugs he takes. I have been harping on that for years. The Doctors just look at me like I am nuts. The insult to injury is that they also tell him to take 2 baby aspirins for his heart. Oh please! He takes 6 350 aspirins a day! Now they are panicking and have taken most of his pain meds away. He hasn't been out of bed today..yesterday we cleaned house..it wasn't bad..but it really hurt his back (he does the vacuuming, I do everything else including cooking for 7)

No, we are not done. He had a biopsy done on his prostate because they did blood tests and a cat scan and felt a lump. He has cancer. Now they want to do radiation for 5 days a week for 8 weeks. He can do the radiation seeding after four weeks. He may and may not do this.

He can't do surgery due to his health and what stage it is. It's advanced but they don't think it has left the prostate. His Doctor sat with us for a long while and explained and answered all our questions. I have researched until my eyes bled!
We will see how this radiation affects his day to day life and if he can drive. It's about 15 miles by freeway and heavy traffic.

One thing that stays with me is what I found on a site "many men die with prostate cancer, few die of prostate cancer."

My hope is that the radiation works for him. And of course that it hasn't spread. He will be going in for his bone density and other scans to determine that. His radiation should start very soon.
The Dr. did say that Mike would have to take a 3 year course of hormone treatments to damper testosterone and that there would be side effects from that. One was hot flashes..we both started laughing. The Doctors eyes went wide and we explained that FINALLY we would agree on the the A.C. setting!

When my Mom was so sick and dying I leaned on the people of Wrecked and Bonkers, this time I will depend on you fine ladies and friends. This board keeps me sane!

Thanks for listening..love you all!

Mikes by pass was scary, but he says since he slept thru most of it..it wasn't bad for him! The main thing is to get him up and walking after he gets out of ICU..or whatever they call it at your hospital. I told Mike after breakfast on his first day out..that when I came by for lunch he had better be shaved and hair combed..he looked like a bum! He was (on his own) and we walked down the hall. He was out of the hospital and home in 6 days! 4 days later he fell off the ladder while cleaning the gutters. A nice lineman got him back in bed. I almost killed him when I got home..lol!
My Mother's boyfriend back in the late 60's had one of the early by-passes. he was in the hospital in Houston, his Dr. was Dr. Debakey one of the pioneers of by pass surgery. Tom was in the hospital for a month and convelesed for another month. It has come a long long way!

I wish your hubby well and that you are loving but hard on him. His heart will thank you!

*BIG HUGS* When it rains it pours? If you have any questions regarding his treatments, I think I mentioned I am about to graduate from my 1st year of Nursing School. We just went over cancer not to long ago & the urinary tract / prostate issues for men, it's still fresh. ANything I can do to at least make it seem less scary. That moment you had laughing about hot flashes, hold onto things like that when things get rough, those make it bearable at times.
As for his pain, have they mentioned alternative medicine? I was a massage therapist for 7 years before nursing. There are many things that may help, not necessarily massage, but acupuncture may help his pain. Also bio-feedback helped my mom with her pains, she was in a couple good car accidents & lost an eye. She is intolerant to many drugs, and found it helped a ton.
Again wow! I can only hope it gets better!

MK oh my.. you do have a lot on your plate right now. My prayers are with you and Mike to make it through successfully. If you need anything let us know. Huge {{{{HUG}}}}

keyz Big {{{{Hug}}}} for you too. Prayers for hubby to make it through safely.

It's been a rough year for many of the group here. I am glad to see that everyone really sticks together and supports each other. This is the best forum I have been honored to be a member of.

I would never have talked about any of this, but to tell the truth I am a bit overwhelmed.
We got thru all his past problems pretty well but that was over 10 years ago. Now he isn't recovering well. What worries me is the radiation. How does that affect people..I mean 8 weeks of this? He had his thyroid radiated and it didn't affect him..but that was 30 years ago. he only had to go a couple of times with that.
Does anyone know? thanks for the hugs by the way!

Selena, I may have questions..the Dr. was pretty good about answering though.
Carrie, when mom was sick and I talked my way through everything..these people really helped! What was the most amazing was that I didn't smoke..it was stressful but with the help of this board..I had enough support to get me thru and not fall down that rabbit hole! This is truly a good place to be in both happy and sad times.
Keyzy keep us informed on your hubby.

MK, you and Mike are in my thoughts and prayers. You and your husband as well keyzy.

We had a family friend that went through the VA for the same treatment approximately 10 years ago MK. It was a narrow beam radiation and he actually did really well through the whole thing, mostly he was just very tired during the series. He was cancer free afterwards and remained that way. Here's to Mike doing as well.

MK...Steve baffled the doctors....they had told him the bones in the knee would fuse together and he would have a 70% limp and might need a cane...he rode his bicycle every day to treatment.....no fusion....even after all this time the skin is leathery....and the rectangle they radiated is as hairless as a babys behind ! I don't remember if he was tired or not....

(was doing some research last night......)

Actually hoping for some flybys that are "experienced" !

Hugs hairball !!!!
