Once when we were first married I had a surgury done. The nurse was a monster and Mike helped her give me a shot I didn't need or want. I kicked them both out and threated to divorce him if he ever ..I mean ever, made a decision for me against my will. In the last 35 years he has been my ally and backup. I have been his. I research everything to do with his health or mine until I am fluent in all the treatments and terminology. I also search the trade papers..like lancet and the like.
Once when he had colon surgery he couldn't eat a thing..he was going nuts! I read an artical in JAMA that said the digestive system would restart again after surgury if the patient chewed gum! The Doctor was amazed and let Mike chew gum..it helped Mike and his digestive system was back in no time! Of course it helped that I made Mike walk all over the place...lol
Now they want to give Mike 3 years of hormone treatment. The artical I read in Lancet oncology said 3 months would do the trick with out all the side effects that hormone treatment in men causes..not just hot flashes and weak muscles but heart problems and other stuff (the heart is a muscle). Now the battle begins..I printed it out.
You have to be armed and aware or you get nothing but SOP..standard operating procedure. No deviation..just what they always do because that is the easiest way.

Oh ! + 10,000 on doing your own research !!!! What do you think is going on when the doctor leave the room for a minute ...he is doing research !!! Although most of them have the computers in front of them now....medicine is a guess....doctors have a "more educated guess"...maybe I feel this way 'cause my grandfather was a Dr., biochemestry...but he taught me to do my own research on stuff ! At the minimum it allows you to follow the conversation a bit better !

Keyzy do they still have him on pain meds? He may just be a bit confused with them on board. My grandfather was on some that had him picking bugs (imaginary of course) off the bed and inviting nonexistent visitors to a breakfast of eggs and spinach. (Ew!) Needless to say, my mom made the doctor switch his meds and the strangeness stopped.

Selena..my advice to you as a budding nurse is to keep an open mind. And don't make things worse for the patients and family! I know the Nurses have long days and very orney patients. I know the Doctors leave them on the spot because the Doctors swan in and out and the family has to lay in wait for them. But we will only be a pain to you for 3 to 7 days..but YOU will be remembered for your kindness well beyond that.
Keyzy..talk to someone about knocking the meds back! (or changing them) The faster he gets on his feet (even if it's only standing in place) and starts thinking better..the sooner you will get home!
Keep up the tough love, he will love you more later. Mike knows I won't play the "honey..will you chew it for me" crap!

Oh I know exactly what you are talking about MK, I remember the good nurses and the ones that were like really your a what?
I also agree men can be the biggest babies sometimes! *lol* honey can you chew it for me?

:facepalm::laugh:

I told one nurse at Tampa General (the 17th best hospital in the U.S. or heart surgery) that she should rethink her career choice! But that was one out of many..the rest were truly Angels.

We have nurses like that here......it's really sad. If that's not what you want to do then go find another job!!!

She prolly had a fight w/her hubby b4 leaving for work; hey wait, you should ask her if she's having a nicotine fit. If so, you could convert her, lol.
