I've been successful once or twice but I usually make the mistake of not cutting deep enough (finding this out after removing the piece from the chuck) then try to recut a little deeper by engaging the feed drive and re-chucking so that the cutter is in a thread...arrrg! PITA!

It takes Practice.
One thing that might help is to chuck up a Piece of rem Material and turn a Diameter on that should be your Minor Diam. Mic it and make whatever adjustments you might need.
Then Dial Out .200" and Chuck Up your Real Work Piece. Dial Back In .200" and your Minor Diam should be Right On The Money.
Of Course, if you have Enough Travel on Your Lathe, you could just move the Tool Towards the Tail Stock without Dialing Out and still get your Work Pice Chucked Up.
