I regret to say that I watched this thing. Here are a few highlights:

City health official:
Unknown risks
Not regulated
Toxicants and nanoparticles
Not a proven smoking cessation device

Youth use has tripled
Proven as a new pathway into nicotine addiction
Flavors very appealing to youth
Potential to renormalize smoking

The public favors these restrictions
The public is concerned about nicotine addiction

We got the word out, but have received only ten comments

Comments at the public meeting are limited to 2 minutes

ANTZ comment: I’m a mother and former physician’s assistant. We don’t know long term consequences of vapor exposure. I don’t want my customers exposed to the vapor. These products are being marketed directly to children. E-cigs come in ......... flavor. Allowing e-cigs in public leads children to think they are safe.

ANTZ: I work at a restaurant and we decided not to allow vaping in order to protect our customers and workers. Hospitality workers should be protected.

I’m an OB-GYN. Blah, blah. The physician group I belong to wants to reduce harms caused by tobacco and nicotine. E-cigs are chipping away at all the hard work we’ve done to combat tobacco and nicotine. One e-cig can contain as much nicotine as a pack of cigs. Insidious efforts to hook our kids by the tobacco industry.

Pro-vape: “They just produce water vapor.”

ENT doctor: “I’ve seen the devastating effects of tobacco use. I’ve seen the results of second hand smoking. I’ve seen kids with bad ear infections because their parents can’t quit smoking. Children who need surgery because their parents can’t quit smoking. E-cigs are not a safe and effective way to quit smoking. There is mounting evidence that the aerosol produced by e-cigarettes contains ingredients that are known to be dangerous, including diacetyl which causes irreversible damage to lung tissue. E-cigs contain nicotine, often at levels much higher than those in conventional cigs. Nicotine causes atherosclerosis leading to heart attacks, stroke and non-healing wounds in the leg and foot that often require amputation.

Teen ANTZ—Kids are using e-cigs all the time. Teens and adults are using them for ......... and other drugs. Considering how hard it is to figure out what’s in e-cigs, indoor use should be banned. Please continue to make sure Minneapolis is a clean and healthy place.

Minn. Restaurant ...’n and Minn. Lodging ...’n—they surveyed a bunch of their members and nobody objected to the proposed ordinance.

Building Owners and Managers ...’n support the ordinance. We want to create a risk and worry free environment for our tenants and their employees. Building management shouldn’t have the burden of figuring out what’s safe to do in buildings.

Pulmonary medicine doctor: Nicotine is the most difficult addiction to treat. I’m concerned about young people becoming addicts. We already have FDA approved products for smoking cessation. The nicotine comes from tobacco. E-cigs are a tobacco product. “Just think about that.” Nicotine is a very sticky molecule. It sticks to everything. Your brain, floors, ceilings, walls. And from there it degrades to carcinogens.

Chairman: My concern is it’s a steppingstone for kids to nicotine use.

Member: Don't put it in the air for everyone else to breathe around you. Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose.

EDIT: Most pro-vaping commentators weren't effective and none had any sort of medical or scientific credentials. The opposition mostly consisted of former smokers who didn't want to go outside and vape with the smokers.

FURTHER EDIT: The standard abbreviation for "association" does not refer to the glutial area of the human body. However it might suggest an ungulate that certain associations resemble.

i didn't hear about this until late yesterday.
i am across the river here in saint paul.
would i be wrong in assuming this was
an orchestrated dog and pony show with
little or no publicity?
there are some very hard working advocates here
that would of been prepared for this kind of thing.
no apparent media hype either.
this is concerning.

According to the City Council staffer at the beginning of the hearing, only two letters were sent in opposition to the vaping ban.

While its easy to criticize those who lie about e-cigs and lobby to ban their use, vapers and vape shops have done very little to oppose the proposal.

the lack of notification before hand concerns me.
its interesting to note the total lack of coverage by the
local news outlets even about the meeting itself.
i have heard through the grapevine that the bars
that prohibit e-cigarettes are peeved at the ones
that do.there loosing customers. losing business
doesn't sit to well with them.

I agree - this is very disappointing.

I heard of it because KSTP did a piece on it the morning of. It consisted of the newsperson talking over a montage of scraggly 20-somethings blowing clouds.

The print media's equivalent of this is to have every story on vaping accompanied by a closeup picture of a vaguely sinister-looking bearded male with an eGo in his mouth.

it might be just me.
prior to the sub committee hearing the big 3 local tv stations
along with the papers on both sides of the river with many
radio stations aired anything(bad) concerning even the most trivial
aspect of e-cigarettes over and over. every meeting, every new(bad)
study, every opinion from every ANTZ,on and on and on.
from just before the sub committee hearing until after the Minneapolis Councils
vote it was like a media black out. if there was any coverage it had to be so
low key as to not garner the attention of me or any of my associates.
i heard about it from the ATM guy at the bar. he just heard it on the radio.
like i said maybe its just me. what would otherwise be a big media event
gets little if any coverage. now its the talk of the town again.
:2c:
