Let's see, keelalagirl started an awesome chat thread where you can talk about anything you want and not be off topic. There was and is a really big sale going on with V4L right now, and you probably got emails about those if you are on the email lists. You got here in time for the Like button kerfluffle. Nothing else comes to mind at the moment. Someone else may have something to add... :) Oh, and you were missed!

Thanks Keelala. Is the sale still going on? My email is messed up also. What was the sale and what is the code?

Ethereal: What could I have done--this guy had my computer for a week. Some spyware popped up asking me to buy their security program, telling me I was already infected. I knew it was a scam, but could not get rid of it. McAfee did not stop it, and when I got my computer back today, all stored info was gone. Am in the process of putting my email addresses back in. Is there really something out there that will stop these *&*!!@# from getting into computers?

Antivirus software does a bad job of stopping malware and spyware. Sounds like you had/have malware. Download Malwarebytes for free and update the virus definitions before using it to scan for Malware. If it finds it it will delete it and restore your PC. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes

Most malware will hijack your browser and everytime you boot up will give you a pop up alerting you to a virus, run a scan programme (you didn't install) telling you of the virus and take you to a website selling another programme to remove it. ....sterds! Best to run the anti malware programme in safe mode.

What did the guy do, reinstall windows and wipe your system?

Yep Morandir got those too, great software. IT is what I do for a living so these issues come with the territory as you know. Unfortunatley not everyone knows how to get rid of these bugs and causes a lot of grief and unnecessary cost. It's a PITA when you do know what you are doing.

Gramva I suggest you download that programme so you don't get into the same situation again, only recently I had the same problem and it killed it good. I beat the bad men once again!

Another good tip is to buy Norton Ghost and a second hard drive. Norton Ghost will copy the entire C drive and mirror it on the second hard drive. If you have a major disaster install the disk and restore the PC from the backup. Malware will often store itself in the system restore so using that just puts the malware back on the system. I personally disable it.

Ok that's my 101 on Malware!

OK Guys: I downloaded all the suggested free anti virus software. Hope it works, thanks. I do appreciate it. Now all I have to do is figure out how to replace all the info the repair shop took away. I think I made a mistake in picking out a shop. When we picked up the computer, he admitted that his shop was more of a "hardware" repair place. He did not mention that when I called him. So I really am grateful to all you computer gurus for sharing what you know.

Thanks for input, Lily. I have not directly spoken to you before, but have really enjoyed reading your posts. And I know a lot of stuff on this forum is b.s., but this family is for real. I am starting to think of them as some of my best friends, and they have not even bought me a drink!!

Great hearing from you and all my friends here on V4L.
