Best Christmas:

When I was in 10th grade, we opened all of our presents on xmas eve (which we had been doing for a few years). Got lots of stuff and my brother, sister and I went to bed happy. When we woke up in the morning, there under the tree were brand new snow ski's, boots, polls, and bindings for my sister and I and a brand new color TV for my brother. It was unbelievable.

For Christmas in 1977, my Dad hit on the idea of buying a record album for my mom. Being more of a classical music fan, he knew little about pop-rock and so he listened and learned that my mom liked a band called Fleetwood Mac. So he went and bought their latest album and put it under the tree without ever knowing that my mom had already purchased the album and, in fact, had been listening to it for months. Funny thing was, she never paid attention to the cover of the album and so, upon unwrapping it, thought that it was an entirely new album and had me put it on the record player immediately to listen to it. I insisted that we already had the album, but she wouldn't believe me until I pulled the other album out. "No wonder all of the songs sound so good!" she exclaimed.

2) One year. I was stationed in North Carolina in the marine corps. Most people on the base took advantage of the four day weekend on christmas to go see their families, so there weren't many people around. On christmas eve, a buddy of mine and I went to mcdonald's for dinner, since nothing else was really open. They had a tree with presents (wrapped up empty boxes, anyway) under it as decorations there. Since we weren't going to get to spend the holiday with our families, we decided to "borrow" a couple of the present decorations. We each took one, unwrapped it, and filled it with whatever we could find in our barracks room that we were willing to part with. Then we re-wrapped them and exchanged them the next morning. We ended up with things like used socks and half empty tubes of toothpaste, but we were both just happy that we got anything.

Another of my dad's Christmas present ideas was to make a soap salad. I don't remember the exact year (sometime in the '70's), but soaps in crazy shapes were apparently a thing. He and I spent several days visiting stores and picking up soap in the shape of tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and (small) eggplant. We also bought a nice glass bowl. Then we placed everything in a box and packed it all full of shredded green tissue paper. Imaginative? Yes. Practical? Not really. We still vegetable-shaped soap near bathroom sinks when I moved out nearly 15 years later.

This is probably my favorite Christmas memory. I love that I get to share it. :)

All growing up (in the days long before the internet made finding obscure pop culture easy), my dad could be persuaded (fairly easily) to sing a Christmas song he learned as a kid listening to the radio in Rockford, Illinois - Yogi Yorgesson's "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas." He sang it with great flair and gusto, and everyone who saw his performance absolutely loved it - it became a staple of the Christmas season for everyone in our community. Adding to the mystique was the fact that almost no one had ever heard of Yogi Yorgesson, so it really became a great folkloric sort of experience.

I moved away, as kids do, but continued the tradition with my own rendition of his rendition of the song. It was just too special of a thing to let pass away.

20 years later, internet archives led me to the original song (below), and I have to admit I was a little heartbroken. My dad's rendition was so much more full and rich (biased, of course, by the love I had for my dad), the original just couldn't compare.

My dad died a few years ago, and my memories of the joy he took in things like singing "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas" make me miss him so much every time I think on them.

I am resolved, however, to keep his rendition of the classic song alive, honoring his spirit as much as I can so that everyone may continue to enjoy his particular Christmas gift.

Every year at Christmas when I was a kid, my grandmother and great aunts used to come in the morning after we had our stockings. Santa used to leave the presents he brought, unwrapped under the tree. The stockings were hung in the dining room.

In order to get from my bedroom to the dining room to get my stocking, I had to go through the living room where the tree was. Since I wasn't allowed to see what Santa had brought until after my grandmother and aunts got there, my parents had to lead me through the living room with my back turned.

It was fun getting my stocking, but it always seemed like my grandmother and aunts would never come!

In my early 30's I lived in Montana for nearly 2 years. I ran some restaurants and worked 7 days per week and even during the hours I wasn't working I was on call. Didn't know anyone there, didn't have a chance to meet anyone and couldn't really associate with my employees cause I was the boss. Only had 2 days off each year. Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Did the same thing for both. Rented a VCR and a bunch of action movies from Blockbuster. Bought a turkey TV dinner, a bottle of vodka and a Gallon of Orange Juice.

Slept in until 10, nestled on the couch watching movies and drinking screwdrivers until about 4pm when I made my dinner. Passed out around 8 or 9 and slept like a baby.

I loved those days.
