Looking for a new MMO to play this summer....While locked in the AC of the office...

MUST BE FREE, I refuse to pay monthly for a service when the fans would GLADLY host the game for free (and I have done so for a couple of games).

Short list of ones that I have played - Rappelz, FLYFF (wow, that sucked), Shiya, MU,Ether Sage (okay but overly kid friendly), PWI, Jade Dynasty.....

Any suggestions? (no personal servers please, I don't have time to remove the embedded virii or hunt for PS clients)

What pisses me off about todays mmorpgs is that it's not skill based. It's item based.

That's probably because although most if not all companies are making games because it's their passion, but you know they're in it for the

No doubt the money is one of the reasons. It just pisses me off that no company has any integrity when it comes to gaming. I honestly think that if they made games that were skill based and honest more people would play that server. That's what made the game so much fun. It's basically the same thing as playing a game and using cheat codes to change your player to the highest level possible. It's just ridiculous and doesn't make any sense.

Agreed! This is why (although these are not RPG's, but shooters) I enjoy playing games like Gears of War and Left 4 Dead. Because unlike their competition (CoD), there is nothing to glitch to cheat as far as making your character stronger, or having more perks. You just get your weapons and your skill with the controller.

Even with games that allow you to 'build' a character, and thus, with some good building skills, you can make a more powerful character than someone elses. Even if they're the same "type" and "level". Those are awesome :)

I feel your pain, my friend. One day, there will cometh a mmorpg that requires skill over equipment variances. And the equipment will be what it should be, additional support to the character build that the USER spent their hours of time creating.

Aeria games has a ton of different ftp mmos. I played domo and a couple others. They have shin megami, which is based odd the persona series for ps2 if you were a fan of that. They are really heavy on pushing the pay items though. Also, guild wars is good, the sequel is coming out soon and looks pretty awesome. And I thought I'd heard eq2 (everquest 2) went ftp as well.

No doubt you should have to build a charecter and obtain skills.

The games make as cash cows are exactally what the players are using. That is why I choose free MMO's, as I generally don't agree with the "cash edge" theory. Then again, In Jade Dynasty I had the game running on both servers, my desktop and my laptop simultaneously. Gotta love the DocSis 2.0 upgrade last year. I do occasionally buy a few credits, but generally no more than a 20 so they get the support for my 100 hours of server time. I gave jade $40 over the course of 4 machines (2 of which ran at 99.999 uptime/client time) for over a year. Rich beyond belief in that game with 2 maxed out characters (Max level ascended's) and 2 that are sitting for me to ascend them. I could buy anything in that game I wanted, so cash doesn't always help. Especially if there is a way to sell cash shop dollars in game (they have a IG money market in that one for players to sell off cash shop dollars at a set exchange rate).

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will check them out.

Wasn't Aeria the ones who hosted Shyia? I think I have played most of their offerings, but I will check them out again.
