I looked at the nicostick, but I was wondering what type of transistors are needed for the switches to limit the current flowing through/how to wire them. Also I was curious as to what exactly is a PCB, and if it would be necessary for a completely homemade mod?

There isn't a transistor at the switch. The switch is wired from the positive battery connection to the switch and to the atty connection.

A PCB is the protection circuit. It is easiest just to use batteries that are protected if this worries you. It keeps the battery from short circuiting or being drained to low.
