It seems to me that most vapers on this forum in Japan are very experienced mod user. Building their own and ordering parts etc.
How did you learn and did you start here in Japan, or was this a hobby you brought with you?
i started vaping as a way to quit smiking so I went with traditional stick batteries. Small cig size batteries weren't good enough so I jumped onto a large medium cigar size and I am happier.
I went to some of the sites you are listing in the threads, fasttech, vaporcone etc......and it all seems overwhelming. Cheaper but overwhelming.

When I first started ecigs I had one of those small cig style ones and it was fine but this was before all these crazy mods/atomizer things. I ended up losing two of mine and went back to smokes.

Then a month or so ago my buddy hooked me up with the knowledge cause it seemed really daunting. But really it's not once you figure out what is needed. I'm about to get into dripping and then grab a rba once I find the one I want.

After watching a couple of YouTube Vids it doesn't look all that complicated and the benefits seem a lot better (taste, price savings).

You just need to grab a couple of the nice batteries and a charger, a kick, mod you like and either a rebuildable atomizer or dripper or a protank style which have replaceable atomizers for cheap.

I have a 18490, which lasts about a day and some and is about the size of a AA...about. And a smaller 18350 that lasts maybe half a day or so and is half the size of the 18490. You can also grab a 18650(?) that lasts 2 days. Just make sure your mod can do all of these sizes.

Like most hobbies it helps to have someone introduce you to the basics.
I guess for now, I will keep it simple and go with the whopping batteries that I have. In this small town, its still cool. Nobody I know vapes and very few have even heard of ecigs, let alone tried one. I did however introduce a friend to the same company I use. And we order together, it just hasn't come yet. So I am still the only one I know in this town that vapes.

I would love to get some advice on what is needed to start the hobby. For example I was on the fasttech site, there is just so much to choose from and so many terms I do not understand.
Is there a basic shopping list?

Basic shopping list...

Find a mod you like and check YouTube for reviews. The bootleg nemesis seems to always be loved. Very, very close to the original but nearly 10x cheaper.

Get one or two of these batteries.

VaporCone

A good charger. Xtar VP1. VaporCone

Then figure out if you want a rebuildable atomizer (RBA), a rebuildable dripper (RDA), a Protank style w/replaceable atomizers or all of the above. The protanks are the simplest but they annoys me.

If/when you go rebuildable get some A-1 kanthel wire, 28, 30 and/or 32 gauge.

VaporCone

And some organic cotton or silica, ewool, hemp, etc. My buddy suggested to just grab the sterile cotton they use in the hospitals, as long as they're 100% cotton.

I think Thats about it.

So I went to fasttech, since I like one stop shopping and they seem to have a lot of stuff, the battery from vaporcone, here is what is on the list to get started.
Kayfun RBA 4.5ml 26.70
Nemesis Mod 29.08
A bunch of pre wired wicks and wires (50) 6.80
Total 62.80

Is there anything else besides the batteries. I know I can just get wire and silica thread, but they are still cheap.

Or am I going about this the wrong way?

Oh I got juice. About 350ml stock pile. I took a look through YouTube and out of all of the atomizers, the kayfun lite seemed to be the easiest to rebuild.

Q: how long (vapes or refills) until a coil/wick needs to be replaced or changed given normal operating? I can use a 3.5ml cartomizer for about a week or two before it needs cleaning.

A quality charger.

And a legit kick or kick2 from evolv or one of their retailers. I got both a real kick and a bootleg and the bootleg is garbage. I basically wasted $10 on the fake.

Evolv LLC - Shop Now

Oh! And an ohm meter which is pretty cheap at fast tech.

Eventually once you start wrapping your own coils you can get the best 28, 30, 32 gauge wire for about $7 for 100ft. That should last for a super long time. And a lifetime supply of cotton is pretty cheap too. From what I've been told cotton in the kayfun is prob the best for flavor.

Also make sure of which bootleg kayfun you're getting. Some suck and some are pretty good. If I remember right, the tobeco is pretty good but the others are having problems.

I'm pretty sure this is the tobeco one.

Vapor Joes - Daily Vaping Deals: BACK IN STOCK: KAYFUN LITE / 91% CLONE - REVISION 2 - $39.99 FS

I can't wait until Japan gets into the vaping fad. Then we will all have vaping lounges to go to to learn and try new products. (Wait, I might still be dreaming)

I would like to share your enthusiasm.
I have the feeling, maybe wrong, that Japan did not yet realize the potential of this business. So it is still a kind of grey zone.
I am afraid when JT will decide to get its hands on it, we will have difficulties to import e-juice as we are currently doing.
Again, this is my personal opinion. Hope I am wrong. Future will tell.

With JTs new tobacco vapor, they seem to want to get involved. But one thing for sure, once they get behind it - many vendors will be looking to sell their wares here.
It just may switch, vendors can sell but an individual will not be able to import. Especially if the WHO regards them as cigarettes.
And if that happens, I WILL become a vendor and open a vape shop myself.
