So im trying to convert my mom. I recently had a son and she is 57 going on 90 with the way she smokes. 2PAD smoker rollin pipe tobacco. I love her very dearly, she has a very wicked cough and the way she wheezes when she breathes scares the living .... out of me. I told her once i got my new setup (Which i did) I would hand her down my current setup. I have 2 ego 1100's and a spare CE4 or 2 that i took over to her house this evening.

Now i remember when i first started. That first vapor hit is very harsh and makes you cough. Go figure she would almost die taking her first drag off of the setup. So i told her mom the first is always the worst, try again please. To no avail she went into the worst coughing fit i have ever seen her have. So i also know that PG gives a harder throat hit and the mix was 70/30. I also know that more nic = harsher hits.. However she is a 2pad smoker...

I'm thinking if i try maybe a 100% VG 6mg or so liquid she might have more success and it might be easier on her poor torn up lungs.. Any ideas guys? Im pretty desperate to help her make the switch. I also ordered about 100 dollars worth of supplies today in the hopes that maybe ill find a right flavor or mix that will help her. I even purchased a bunch of DIY supplies with the idea of her in mind... (Dont get me wrong i planned on doing that anyway! :p) but she was the driving force behind the "Purchase" Button. She says perfume's and smells send her "Allergies" All haywire and into an asthma attack. So i think ill try and mix her an unflavored 100% VG 6-16MG Liq.

Any ideas guys?

What you're doing seems to be the way to go. Check out RiP Trippers on youtube, or maybe some posts here at ECF and reddit about the "side effects of vaping" or "how I got started in vaping". Most of them will mention how PG made their lungs feel heavy, or how they'd nearly cough their brains out until they figured out X and did Y to make the cough go away. Maybe even try to give her a 100% VG mix with no nic and see if that's easier on her. I find that PG doesn't really bother me, but high nic content makes my throat feel like I tried to fit Wolverine's fist in my mouth.

EDIT: I know that giving her a 0 mg nic juice would be useless as far as weaning her off cigs is concerned but it might aid in isolating the cause of her cough.

In addition to trying the unflavored, I'd make sure she is doing a mouth to lung pull rather than a straight to lung pull .. My Uncle just tried a real PV today for the first time and he is used to doing 'lung hits' with his cigarettes and he had an amazing coughing/gagging fit.. after I told him about mouth to lung he was OK as long as he actually remembered to do it that way.

(I never knew people did straight lung inhales on analogues.. I never did. but it seems like a common thing  )

I don't know that I have any great advice. I truly wish I'd had the opportunity and knowledge to help my mom switch. It was just over two years ago that I lost her to tongue cancer. She was a young 61. So I absolutely understand your sense of urgency. My point is not to share advice about vaping, but rather my life experience.

For years we tried with my mom. Got her to do patches, but eventually she just smoked and had the patches on all the time. Even when she was told she was going to die, nothing changed. I don't even understand that stubborness. But I have to believe coming on here to ECF that if some of the folks on here can do it, anyone absolutely can. I've seen posts of people who smoked for 50, 60+ years here...like what's the point in quitting at that point? But they do it for themselves...perhaps it's a point to prove, a life accomplishment...that you can actually quit something that's controlled the majority of your life. I don't know how to inspire that in someone, but I hope that some of the old timers put their two cents in here.

Be gentle, realize that it's her choice. Nagging someone or being overbearing will never get you anywhere. Come from a place of love and stress the importance that you want her around. It's not about you...it's about her choice to want to be with you for as long as she can. We know the science now, we know the smokes kill us...no one can hide from that truth...but if anyone's going to choose to live, it has to come from within. Maybe run an exercise with her that if she was only going to be here for another 5 years, what would she do? What would she do differently?

I could say much more, but I'll leave it at that. I truly do hope you're successful, for mom's everywhere. Best of luck and love.

I think the route you're taking is a really good one! More vg than pg will ease her in for sure. I wish I could tell you higher nic at 100% vg would be great, cuz it would seem she'd prefer a higher nic at first. Good luck friend! You're both in my thoughts and I really hope it goes well. Especially so your new little one can spend a life with a healthier Gram. Congrats, btw.

I offer no advice Vappers other than to say keep trying. Yo momma is my age. We iz stubborn and just don't like new fangled crap. My daughter tried getting me on e-cigs 2 years ago. It was a bad taste, bad e-cig, just a bad deal all the way and I didn't like it. I finally found something that I think will finally get me out of the tobacco fields. It's out there for mom as well. Keep looking.

She rolls with pipe tobacco? Tough lady.

When you did make the switch, did you find yourself in hardcore coughing fits the first day? Or was it pretty smooth?

And yes, she cant afford anything other then the pipe tobacco. :(

She does want to quit yes. She tells me she wants to try chantix but i have heard some terrible things about that little pill. I would much rather see her take the vapor road so she can still enjoy sitting down with her coffe and morning "Cig" if you know what i mean. Its the little things ;) But yes, she does want to quit. She is all for trying the vaping and is willing to do some testing before she goes to chantix so im hopefull.

Now that's better. Then keep encouraging her. I'd offer her a better topper--top-coil clearomizers can be very harsh. Get her a Kanger T3S (or eVod) and some extra coils. They are bottom coil devices, very easy to fill and clean, and they provide a much cooler, smoother vaping experience than the CEs.

And be careful with 100% VG--many people, including yours truly, can't tolerate 100% VG. Go for a 70/30 or 60/40 PG/VG blend with a little neutral flavoring like menthol.

Hey Vappers, congrats on trying to help her out.

Wow - 2 PAD and presumably unfiltered? 6 mg is probably going to be way too low for her. I was a 2PAD smoker and had to start at 24 mg, but absorption from vaping is different for everyone.

If she's already having breathing issues from smoking...

First, the higher the PG ratio the harsher it is. I would completely reverse that PG/VG ratio for her to 30/70 or even 100 VG.

Second, you have the whole "insult to injury" thing going on here. Her lungs are probably a mess from smoking, introduce something new and... it doesn't go over so well for a lot of people. I absolutely could not lung inhale when I started or it sent me into worse coughing fits that I ever had from smoking. I can do it now - but I don't and don't miss it. I was a deep lung inhaler when I smoked and it took me weeks to un-learn my smoking drag before mouth inhaling became second nature. But it can be done. You need to encourage her to "smoke it like a cigar" - sort of open mouth pulls to the back of the throat and... stop. See here, this may help: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/337017-inhalation-technique-e-cigarette.html

Unflavored? Sure - why not? The hard one here is going to be getting vape into her that she can deal with without coughing fits. A higher nic will take care of the throat hit if you increase the VG. High VG will have it's own sweet edge to it anyway. But if she wants flavors? - Go nutz! A vape shop with a testing area may be a good idea to help sort that out if you have access to one.

Hoping for the best here!

What Katya said. Get her away from top coil anything so she doesn't have to fuss with all the "tip, flip and rotate" to keep it wet. A properly set up Kanger bottom coil anything won't give her a dry hit if there is liquid in there.

Lung inhale??? ;) Ouch...

I agree with Rick--6 mg won't even begin to scratch her itch. She should have several eilquids in different strengths--from 12 to 24 mg/ml, to begin with.

And if you're looking for inexpensive mild tasting juices, try Liqua. You can get it locally--or from Fasttech. Their flavorings are made in Italy, the juces are very clean and clear and on a bland side. Totally inoffensive. I like their Cappuccino and Coffee (alone or mixed together).

So your saying you dont lung inhale anymore? I have read that from a bunch of people here. Inhaling hurt too much so they just did the mouth inhale and exhale... Im going to try this with her. Have her start here i think. If she gets adventurous then she can do the "Lung" Inhale at her own expense! Awesome idea guys! This is the kind of stuff im looking for!

Hmmm, Perhaps ill go buy a 10 dollar mt3 for her then. I myself do prefer the mt3 over the ce4's, so im sure she would too. Thanks Katya and Rickajho!

I'd get her the T3S--it's lighter, has greater capacity and she'll be able to see the liquid level clearly--not so with the MT3.

Just saying. This is from my own experience--I love my T3S and my baby T3.
