mom officially told me yesterday that she's quitting smoking and will be vaping-of course, I told her to go at the pace that works for her...wow-I'm proud of her and happy that this Christmas present worked...hard part will be getting her to trouble shoot independently. she likes her key lime juice-I didn't(loll!) I initially thought this would be a way for her to cut down on cigarette consumption and only hoped there was a possibility of quitting, even though it felt very, very remote-pleasantly surprised with her statements and goals now-also got her hooked on salted caramel donuts now too

I live right next door to my mother and since she is now retired I am trying my best to totally convert her. I keep everything cleaned and filled for her and all she has to do is plug in her MVP 2 every night.

I just cannot get her to quit buying cigarettes. I tell her just don't buy them and you can't smoke them. She too has coughing fits and I though once she saw how I have quit coughing that it would convince her.

With me it was easy. When I started I wasn't going to quit...just vape at home and in the car and smoke at work. Then If found myself vaping at work too so I just quit buying cigarettes and haven't had one in over a year.

Im pretty much in the same boat. I told myself i would just use it around the house and smoke out and about. My fiance hates smoke and the way it tastes/smells on my breath. Hoever i found that i was taking it with me everywhere andf using it all the time so i just kicked the habit.

UPDATE: Its been about a month since i introduced my mother to vaping and she still hasnt gone through the full CE4 tank of juice. She takes it with her everywhere and always has it on her. Here's the catch:

She says "It helps her sleep better". So she uses it at night before bed to help loosen up the congestion in her lungs. I think this may just be in her head but this is how she is using it. She coughs too hard when she tries to use it. Anyway- Im beginning to give up hope. The other day she called my fiance to have her pick up some pipe tobacco for her and before she got of the phone she told her "Dont tell derick im still smoking". I had to tell her that no matter what i would always love her, smokre or non smoker. I', just here to try and help.

I was thinking that if someone was trying to ease someone into vaping, like an older, more reluctant individual perhaps, maybe taking teensy steps would help. The coughing thing or the thing where people seem unable to even inhale enough for vapor to come out seems to be a really common problem.

So for the first teensy step, why not just start with a low or no nic, high VG juice (as was mentioned) and have them mouth vape only? Someone on here likens it to sucking on a straw, which I think is a good analogy. Just to get the hang of it and the feel of it. Let them keep smoking analogs, and just practice the vape for fun, even better would be to find a flavor they like. You can explain that many people who vape have reported noticing more nicotine absorbtion through the mouth anyway, so ultimately, if they choose to replace analogs, they may be mouth inhaling more anyway.

Next you would work on the mouth to lung inhale. When they have that, bump up the nicotine and PG percentage a bit so they can start to get the throat hit sensation, that combines with the lung inhale may start to feel more like an analog.During all this time you can be experimenting with flavors, so perhaps you will have found some they prefer.

Only after they are comfortable with the flavor, the inhale, the device, then you can work on phasing out the analogs. I think it is really worth pointing out to the person that a willingness to experiment really seems to be correlated with a successful switch to vaping. It seems that very few people just one day grab an e cig and yee haw, forget all about analogs, would be nice if it were that easy, but these are not the same product. They are a fun (IMO) tasty nicotine delivery system, but they are not a regular tobacco cigarette, and the sensation will not be the same, and some experimentation will tell you what is the most pleasurable e cig set up for you. In the end, it is up to them to decide.....but by trying to expose them to the world of vaping, at least you know you tried.

This is a lot of great advice. You should be a "vaping instructor" P Patty.:)

Not wishing to p on anyone's cherrios here, but Mom may be telling you she wants to quit, to appease her son. No one has mentioned that she may like the mechanics of smoking. Papers, prince albert can and the act of making her own might possibly be a nice pleasurable experience for her. I know a pipe tobacco roll your own smoker. Every shirt he owns, even new dress shirts, have tiny burns in them. His fingers are permanently stained that nice yellowish brown. I've asked for years why he doesn't just buy a back of non-filters and you would have thought I kicked his dog.
My wife still smokes and I've introduced her to the ecig. I had several cartridges left from the blue type cig. I bought her the evod starter kit that I started on. Every day, about the same time, I ask if she is ready to quit. Her reply is always "I need to...maybe tomorrow". All you can do is plant the seed and allow something else to water it.

I sympathize a great deal here.

My significant other smokes, and looks down on me for Vaping. She sees it as me delaying the inevitable.

Without going into politics too much, I tell her I'm delaying the inevitable, which is death - which heck we all face. Blunt faced I march on.

Funnily enough, it was her 64yr old mother that really got me in to vaping - she quit on a crappy ciglike, she now vapes in style thanks to my "handdowns" Seems wrong, considering she initiated it all to call them handdowns, but we're happy enough.

In response to the OP - you did what you could, lead a horse to water etc. We love our family regardless, you have done your bit. It didn't work, nothing wrong there. Maybe, given time, that will change.

Kudos for offering the alternative however. It's all we can do

I get people vaping by telling them they dont have to chose. Smokers are afraid of quiting sometimes. I was. I vaped and smoked for five months. First i just vaped when i couldnt smoke. Then i started vaping where i shouldnt really smoke, like in the car. My mom was freaking out. With things like im not ready to quit smoking. So was a neighbor. I said who said anything about quiting. Now they are vaping and smoking less.

Thank you. To be honest, I find this topic absolutely fascinating and I am trying to learn as much as possible about it. I am an RN that works in home care. I have many years of experience working with folks who would benefit from making changes to their health habits. My approach is one of "I will tell you what I know, you are free to do what you want with that info". In home care you have to be able to let go....you are in that person's home, you tread lightly. That said, smoking analogs is one of the biggest issues some of our patients and families have, probably the most dangerous is people that smoke with their oxygen running. People can (and have) lit themselves or their homes on fire doing this.

Because e cigs are not a "recognized" way to quit smoking, it is not something I can "officially" educate patients about. However, that does not mean we cannot have a friendly exchange about their experiences/my experiences and understanding of the products. As of yet I am simply gathering info, reading the experiences of you guys and listening to my patients.

I vape recreationally and have never smoked an analog. Experience-wise, this is very limiting to me, although, even if I did have the experience of quitting smoking, that is still an individual thing, there are many different ways to quit a habit or addiction. The same thing does not work for everyone.

Most of my patients are older, long term smokers. Most of them, at some point, have tried an e cig. Usually it is because a family member gave them one. Unfortunately, that family member does not usually smoke or vape, they just have good intentions and want the person to quit. The person tries the ecig once or twice, hates it, and never picks it up again. If I can share info with people how to have success with e cigs I would like to do it, but thus far I am still at that info-gathering stage.

From my vantage point, I am not sure how much my learning on here can help my patients and their families. In order to be successful with this, they need to usually be willing to experiment, go slow, and learn about the products....it is not a quick fix. They would do best to have a friend or family member like Vappers, our OP, helping to guide them on an ongoing basis. As their nurse, it is not a role I can take on. But you never know...maybe some day some person will have a chat with me and want to investigate further.
