Update guys!

I went over to my mothers house tonight equipped with a eGo VV, set it at 3.0v and some 95% VG 24mg 5% Distilled water. She took some pulls, diddnt cough but diddnt get much vapor either. The coil is a 3ohm coil so should burn nice and cool for her. She even turned up the voltage on her own to get a better pull off it! I was proud of her. After about 5 minutes and 10 pulls she set it down and went back to smoking stinkies but i definately feel like we made progress today! Ill head back over in a week or so and see if her cartridge has emptied. Who knows, maybe she will call me and say she needs more! Ill keep you updated. Again, thank you all!

I really feel like maybe we might be getting somewhere!

Wouldn't it have been much better if
After about 5 minutes and 10 pulls she set it down and went to a cigalike disposable
?

A Protank with an air control base may be helful. When I started I was doing lung hits and they caused a lot of coughing. I was using Nanos with the plastic drip tip. You can take a #58 drill bit and drill two holes close together on one side and one hole on the other side. It allows you to cover any combination of holes to be covered by your finger to adjust the mixture of air and vape for lung hits. It's a cheap way to find the air to vape mixture for a satisfying lung hit draw. Try to find a juice that imitates the pipe tobacco she uses for RYO--maybe Ahlusion Vurley or one of their Express tobaccos, Goodejuice Patriot or get NET.com Varietals and mix her a Cavendish/Virginia/Turkish blend. Good luck.

You bet! I am 70 (unbelievably) and smoked most of my adult life. Smoked lots. Quit a bunch of times with various and sundry methods. Always went back. I mostly decided to put and end to the smoking due to finally figuring out how much I was spending on cigs. Started with Greensmokes (for about a week) and stopped smoking with the very first one. Now like everyone else on this forum I am chasing different flavors and newer and better ways to vape. But I haven't even though of having another cigarette. Just because a person gets older doesn't mean that they become some stick in the mud who can't change their ways. Life is about growth and change all the way to the last day!!

Well said cbrite!

I was the same as your mother! 2 PAD pipe tobacco hand rolled.

I found i have an allergic reaction to PG, so i smoke 100% Organic VG at 6mg, no cough's lung inhale or mouth to lung. Keep at her with it, and trying different things.

I believe there is a relationship between roll your own and nic levels. I used an injector and tubes with pipe tobacco. They are not packed as tight as store bought and consequently use less tobacco per cigarette. I found that once I started rolling my own I smoked much more. My thoughts were always that between a looser packed cigarette and the pipe tobacco I was getting less nic. I think the pipe tobacco may have fewer additives than a store bought cig too. All this said, I can't vape anything above 12mg and use a lower level when I'm just sitting and chain vaping. On the positive side I believe this is what finally led me to quit after 40+ years. I did the roll your own for over a year, smoked more per day than ever, and just couldn't stand all that smoke anymore. I felt like the kid who's mom made him smoke the whole pack in one sitting. Lower levels worked for me under these circumstances.

I just joined ECF because of this thread. This is my first post.

I am getting real close to 60 myself and Dec 26 2013 was my last nasty. I was a 2PAD smoker and one day when in buying them, I noticed the cig a likes and asked the gal about them. She suggested that I try a disposable to see if they were for me. I did that and no problems BUT what I found out was that until the last nasty was out of the house and I had to solely rely on the e cig, that I would definately use both. Perhaps until the nasties are completely out of reach for her, she won't totally embrace this new method?

My son did the transfer to vaping with me and having that support is really great. My hubs was away when we did our pilgrimage into vaping and when he returned, rather ignored us for a couple of weeks but he started noticing how much better my breathing was and my increased energy so decided to give it a try and is 2 weeks into vaping himself.

My mom is 80 and stopped smoking 15 yrs ago but my pops never quit. He has been a 2PAD humpie straight smoker since his early 20's and will be 99 next month. Mom makes him go outside to do this. Well, I have been taking him disposables and he has been using them along with just 2 or 3 stinkies a day. I have him a V2 kit ordered and when it arrives, will see how it goes but I know that one day he will tell me I need to go to the smoke shop for him and I will tell him to use the cig a like instead and stop buying him nasties. Making the change has nothing to do with age, but I feel that the temptation of having real nasties around makes it more difficult.

Thank you for the welcome Mother Nature. He isn't smoke free yet but I will certainly get him there by this summer. I see the light at the end of the tunnel with him and am sure now that it isn't a train. I have spent almost a year trying him on different disposables and finally found one he liked so got him the starter kit and think it will be smooth sailing from here on out. HA! He says he doesn't want to get rid of his ashtray... it is a big Mack bulldog thing. We scrubbed it out and he now uses it to hold his cig a likes. Life is good : )

Heehee I couldn't wait to pack everything up…except the ashtray and it's not even a cool Mack bulldog. Although I did scrub it clean the day I ordered my e-cig. Where would I put all those little fuzzes I pick up off the floor if it weren't for the ashtray? Glad he's got you to help him on his way. Good luck to you both.

I hope people are getting how useful the disposable cigalikes can be for making the transition.
Of course finding a taste that a person can go with is a big issue, but with the disposable cigalike there is no fiddling to cause people to just give up.

If I gave somebody one of my protanks to help them stop smoking, I'd have to sit down with them and give them instructions!! Much easier to check what locations convenient to them have disposable cigalikes and get them a couple to try out, and see if it takes off from there. After the finally get the CONFIDENCE that this thing can actually WORK, it's partly a financial decision to go for a tank type system to reduce monthly costs.

fixed mom's set up again this yesterday at work and switched her to a mini protank 2 instead of the iclear1(had a bum head )-put in high vg e liquid-no coughing at all...she's cutting down on her cigarettes and vaping now more(except when set up gives her issues during the week, then she uses the disposables I got her)-hoping the topper works better now-she's showing interest in other flavors-I just got to keep in mind HIGH VG now-we're getting there:) she's happy with the 18 mg nic so far and it's working. good thing we work together on the weekends or else there would be problems with her figuring out how to check things..that'll come in good time as she watches me and learns more.

When I walked into a vape shop for the first time and started trying out all the juice and setups, they made me cough something terrible. The guys at the shop convinced me that I needed less nic. I walked out with 11mg juice, but it always made me cough so I put it aside. I came back to it a couple of months later and bought some 100% VG juice at 12mg and 18mg. Even the 18mg didn't make me cough. It was smooth and totally enjoyable. After I got my setup right, I didn't pick up any more cigarettes. Give the VG a try.

So im trying to convert my mom. I recently had a son and she is 57 going on 90 with the way she smokes. 2PAD smoker rollin pipe tobacco. I love her very dearly, she has a very wicked cough and the way she wheezes when she breathes scares the living .... out of me...

Amazing how different but similar the situation can be for smokers/ex-smokers. My parents both smoked for most of my life. I can remember our weekend road trips through the "country" (everything around here was countryside back in the early '70's, hell, we lived in the country!) and how I would almost choke out in the back seat when both of them got their regular Winstons going. Fast forward 20 years...Mom has high blood pressure, bad ulcers, clogged arteries (it all came to a head for the second and final time going on 3 years ago now) and Dad has emphysema and COPD. They both quit smoking nearly cold turkey and then decide they are going to warn me to stop smoking too. I held on for another ten years but finally stopped with the help of vapor.

If the situation were reversed, I am certain I would be looking at the same situation you are: My Dad wouldn't even consider trying vape, but my Mom would at least humor me. No one likes to be forced to stop doing one thing they have "enjoyed" for decades...if you think this transition is hard, wait until they start talking about taking your Mom's license away...

Good Luck!

addendum: from experience, I think the wicked coughing is not really caused by the vape so much as the congestion already in the lungs from smoking. Rolled pipe tobacco is some hard stuff and I think that is the source of the cough.

You already know the deal on first vaping, but prob don't know the impact of quitting long term smoking. I ended a 30 year habit, and the first few weeks were hell physically, and I'm not talking about withdrawls. I'm talking about violent coughing fits (which I still randomly get, but with far less frequency).

To accurately descrbe it would require language of a variety that this forum does not allow for.

I've known people that quit and were quite ill for months, as their lungs went into purge mode. So expect that as a secondary hurdle, and try to be prepared (you already got a surprise one with how she reacted to vaping, trying to give you a chance to research and be prepped before this one likely hits).

can't believe it but....mom didn't smoke ANY cigarettes at work with me yesterday that I know of..i did get in late due to baby sitter running late and yuck weather, but smelled no cigarettes...I'm not going to even mention my observation to her today-lol. I'll be cleaning her tank and switching her coils so she can try the key lime pie I got her(high vg content)....all I an can say is "wow", I know it worked for me, but...pretty impressed with the situation none the less. And then a b&m is opening close to our job soon, so I can get her there to try out other new flavors if she's interested, and plan on taking another current smoker co-worker if she's still interested too-hope they have some high vg stuff-that was definitely ausing my mom's coughing issue. I haven't been pushy at all-just letting her experiment on her own terms and helping her along the way when needed. Good luck to all of us trying to get loved ones vaping!

So im trying to convert my mom. I recently had a son and she is 57 going on 90 with the way she smokes. 2PAD smoker rollin pipe tobacco. I love her very dearly, she has a very wicked cough and the way she wheezes when she breathes scares the living .... out of me. I told her once i got my new setup (Which i did) I would hand her down my current setup. I have 2 ego 1100's and a spare CE4 or 2 that i took over to her house this evening.

Now i remember when i first started. That first vapor hit is very harsh and makes you cough. Go figure she would almost die taking her first drag off of the setup. So i told her mom the first is always the worst, try again please. To no avail she went into the worst coughing fit i have ever seen her have. So i also know that PG gives a harder throat hit and the mix was 70/30. I also know that more nic = harsher hits.. However she is a 2pad smoker...

I'm thinking if i try maybe a 100% VG 6mg or so liquid she might have more success and it might be easier on her poor torn up lungs.. Any ideas guys? Im pretty desperate to help her make the switch. I also ordered about 100 dollars worth of supplies today in the hopes that maybe ill find a right flavor or mix that will help her. I even purchased a bunch of DIY supplies with the idea of her in mind... (Dont get me wrong i planned on doing that anyway! :p) but she was the driving force behind the "Purchase" Button. She says perfume's and smells send her "Allergies" All haywire and into an asthma attack. So i think ill try and mix her an unflavored 100% VG 6-16MG Liq.

Any ideas guys?

I have to agree that 100% vg is absolutely the way to go...But as far as flavour goes i'd have to say that Menthol would be ideal. With little or no nicotine Menthol still seems to satisfy. Quite a nice neutral taste menthol can still make it seem like a user is smoking a menthol cigarette. I'd highly recommend it.

You have one hell of a road to travel, I wish you and your mom the best of luck.

My lawyer died late last year from what I can only presume was a smoking related illness. She was such a sweet old lady.

I didn't know about vaping then but would have loved to have turned her on to it, especially knowing that smoking would eventually get the better of her.

Keep on telling her you love her.

Maurice
