I've never been taxed on lemonade, iced tea, Gatorage or fruit punch. Interesting.
I hadn't noticed what is written in red at the top of the Ohio tax page I linked to:

This archived Information Release has been superseded by a later release. It is
archived here for historical/reference purposes ONLY. For the most current
Information Releases, please refer to the main "Information Releases Current

I couldn't find the updated info, but came across an interesting article on how confusing it is:

It's funny how sales taxes are always wacky. "This is taxed, this is not for some nonsensical reason."

One example I know well (I'm in IT): in California, software that is downloaded and is not provided on a physical disc is not taxed, however, as soon as you put it on a CD/DVD and sell it on that medium, it's taxable. So, a $100k software purchase is tax-free as long as no disc changes hands. At current rates, simply asking a vendor not to ship a disc means a 9%+ savings right off the bat.

Some people will read that and think to themselves...
The whole thing is screwed up, and should be completely changed.

And some will read it and conclude that the right answer is to tax downloads too!
And I submit that the latter need to stop voting.

It is probably due to the CO2 emissions, which contributes to climate change (think of all the millions of outgassing soft drinks!). Actually, California should include them in their greenhouse gas cap-and-trade program.... hey, I might be on to something!

More calls for taxes on sugar. Their argument seems to be that it's OK to compromise moral prinicipals, because that's what we've done in the anti-smoking hate campaign.

They're also using that dishonest argument of cost to society, based on just one part of the picture, carefreely ignoring the numbers on the savings side.
Non-smokers endorse smoker tax because its not their ox being gored. In contrast, sugar tax would affect everyone. We have a fighting chance to stop this fraud before it becomes as systemic as the tobacco tax racket

When the sugar taxes and bans on selling to minors go into effect, the children will do that for us.

Unless they've been so cowed and regimented by the helicopter moms, they're afraid to say a word.
