I've found that I tend to use about the same amount regardless of the method. The only exception is that with LR atty's they do seem to burn through slightly more liquid than others. Your safe cig carts (I believe they are cartomizers, actually) should probably hold about 1ml, so you go through 1ml per day. When I used 1ml cartomizers I went through about 4-5 but didn't vape them until they were empty - so used about 3ml per day anyway.
The average vaper goes through about 3ml of juice, most wont go through 5ml but certainly we are all different so many do.
Here's where the value part comes in: the only equipment needed to drip is an atomizer (don't know if safe cig has an atomizer available - I don't see it on the website) and some sort of mouthpiece (like a drip tip, but an empty cartridge will work) so no more buying cartomizers or cartridges. Just your e-cig and a bottle of e-liquid, that's all you need to drip.
*note: the safe cig calls their cartomizers a cartridge but technically they are not a cartridge because the atomizer is built in (that's how they got the name "cart-omizer")
I like the sleeve dunking method if your cartos come with sleeves. The end cap thing is really easy too, but only if you have the rubbery end caps that come out easy with a bent paper clip. If your ends are glued in that's too much hassle IMO.
As for juice recommendations, I don't really do that because it's just too subjective. It's like saying, "what's the right flavor of ice cream?" Gosh, I don't know, you just have to taste some and see if you like it.
It really comes down to personal preference. I like dripping because I don't have to refill anything. The amount of juice you use won't change much from using carts to dripping and you can reuse carts so there's not much gain/loss from doing one or the other. As for flavors, like Rosa said, it's like ice cream. In fact... ice cream is a pretty good flavor!
I'd recommend trying some sample packs and reading through the E-Juice Review section of the forum.
One more thing to remember when you are trying to figure out $/day for vaping, is the larger quantity of juice you are buying, the cheaper it gets. A 5ml bottle may cost $4, but 30-60ml bottles of juices are significantly cheaper per ml. Once you find flavors and suppliers that you like, you can buy juice in the larger sizes and save nearly half of buying in small quantities.

I honestly think that if you get a full day from a cart then you're highly unlikely to use close to 5ml per day dripping. Most carts and cartos hold less than 1ml of juice. I find that I actually use less juice dripping than I do with cartos.
I consider myself a heavy vaper and 5 ml of juice lasts me about 2 days. I use both, cartos and atomizers, and drip every once in while.
And as Trouble2k stated, the cost per ml drops in the larger size bottles. Freedomsmokeusa also sells 3ml samplers for 2.25. Good idea to try the samplers till you find the right one. Then buy in quantity.

One of the great things about dripping (aside from the better tasted and easier draw) is that there is no waste of liquid. I may try the tank system for those times when we are on the road for a long trip, but will never go back to the foam stuff.
