My dad has been a huge Merle Haggard fan his entire life. He owns every album. When he finally got to see him in concert, he almost started crying. I assume it was a very happy, surreal moment. We teased him terribly. My dad got separated in the crowd when the show was over and ended up going out the WRONG DOOR. He was standing in front of Merle Haggard's Tour Bus smoking, when Merle Haggard walked out and asked him how he liked the show. My dad was dumbfounded. While he tells the tale, he will often say, "He was standing RIGHT THERE! He was so close, I could have shot him!" (Note: My father is not an assassin. He just says silly things when he's excited.) lol

My father was an engineer. He helped design a new version of the backhoe loader. He brought the heavy machine home on a trailor one day and dug a swimming pool in our back yard. It was lined with vinyl and surronded with a concrete walk. Then the pump was installed.

It cost my dad about $2000 for our 20'X40' inground pool.

My grandfather (maternal) was a real sweetheart. He died at 93, when I was 7. But I remember just being near him always made me feel loved. My older sisters say the same- it's like he radiated goodness. That's some good vibes, lol. My other grandfather was an alcoholic and could be very difficult. However, we had some fun cutting and putting bows in his hair when he passed out one time!

Several men never seem to have or find what is required to be a "family man." I'm sorry that your father didn't have it. But, it sounds like your Grandfather more than made up for it. Silver Star...he was loving and brave. ♥
Thank you, LeDean.

My Dad (he's not my father), on the other hand, is an inspiration. He's stood by my side in times of trouble. Told me when I was dead wrong. He's driven hours to visit me on a 3-year state-mandated hiatus from society (I made a few mistakes when I was younger). He's driven my Mom through crazy winter weather to be by my side as I lay in a coma on Christmas. He's willing to give me his last dollar or his life, I'm sure. He's not a very affectionate man, as his Dad was a Master Gunnery Seargent in the Marine Corps. It took alot for him to tell me, "I love you", so when the time came it meant so much more. I love my Dad and would lay down my life for him, just as he would for me.

My Dad passed away in 2008. He died while snorkeling in Kona, HI. I miss him very much and Father's Day is difficult for me. I know that there are alot of people who don't have fathers in their lives or who lost their fathers at a much younger age and I should feel lucky I had my until I was in my 30's but it doesn't take away the feeling of loss and the place in my heart that he filled can not be filled by anyone else.
