Must we call cigarettes "analogs"?

I don't care for either "analogs" nor "stinkies." One makes them sound very innocuous and the other disparaging when there are still people choosing to smoke. I don't care to sound like and anti-smoker... don't like them. Smoking is still a personal choice and not a moral issue. Keep the pet names and call them what they are... cigarettes.

I totally relate to this. Although I haven't smoked a cigarette in almost 4 years, I still keep ashtrays around for those who do, and will never, ever in any way join or become identified with the antismoking crusade. But analogue doesn't connote anything pejorative to me, and that's the only way in which our opinions differ.

I don't like calling them analogs either. I was confused at first, thinking the e-cig was the analog to regular cigs. Can't we just call them cigs?

You are not confused, by definition vaping devices are the analog of cigarettes:

noun - something having the property of being analogous to something else
adj - of a circuit or device having an output that is proportional to the input

Yes, exactly.

But 14 pages on this topic have shown that the actual meaning of this entire word group is completely lost on people. Some defect in the teaching of high school English, no doubt.

I would categorize it as using a definition based on context and misunderstanding the difference between analog and digital.

No, not quite, because there is no "actual meaning" of the word group that is lost on people in this context. Traditionally, analogy/analogous/analogue/analog has enjoyed a wide variety of disparate applications, and is broad enough to be potentially applicable to anything that is said to be somehow akin to anything else. Specific and idiomatic usage (as in music or information technology) simply evolves the way it evolves, and it's incumbent on dictionary compilers or high school language teachers to offer definitions that reflect the way the word is actually being deployed, not the other way around.

Let's put this to rest: I assume people call cigs analogs because they are the oposite of their "digital" electronic devices used to vape. But honestly, analog sounds so stupid. It's like hearing a douche-bag talking. It just gives vaping a bad image when someone who doesnt know what ecigs are and hears the word analog. They would want that person to get off their high horse. I felt the same way. I put-off starting vaping a few months ago because the people I saw vaping seemed real douchey with their lingo on all the parts like cartos, atomizer heads etc etc. They seemed to be enjoying the fact I knew nothing. It really turned me off, don't be a Douche. Analogs.........ed

I don't think anyone does use the lingo on purpose to confuse or act superior or anything. You almost forget other's don't know what you're talking about. But I can relate- it took me almost a year before I started vaping. I'd read here and get confused and click off. Once I posted and asked, and other new people posted, you finally understand what they're talking about.

That's why it's good for new people to stick around and help other new people. You can relate more. And they don't use so many initials I've noticed. Nothing confused me more than asking about a liquid and someone saying "check out GV or BWB or JV."

*snip*When and if my sense of smell does comes back I will deal with it one step at a time. Until then you couldn't make me give up this form of nicotine replacement any easier than I gave up tobacco. I may not like the realization that I was offensive to others but I certainly will not waste my time feeling awful about that many years of my life.

OMG - My sense of smell began coming back about two weeks ago... I almost hate it - EVERYthing stinks... my sweet beautiful 8-yr-old daughter has breath to challenge that of a troll... my gentleman friend's feet smell like the rot and decay of a thousand corpses... and milk in the fridge more than 2 days - forget about it!!

LMAO. I know the feeling. My girls feet are horrid after work. There's always a downside at least the good smells make up for it.

This explanation made sense to me:
"by definition vaping devices are the analog of cigarettes:

noun - something having the property of being analogous to something else
adj - of a circuit or device having an output that is proportional to the input"

"analog" has the advantage of being short and the disadvantage of not having an immediately obvious meaning (and maybe therefore giving the impression of an over-fondness for using jargon/fancy words outsiders wont understand). When talking to someone not necessarily experienced in the whole vaping lingo, "traditional cigarette" is a reasonable way to distinguish from "electronic cigarette".

The digital/analog thing simply bothered me because technically, electronic does not automatically mean digital, and the term analog really has nothing to do with a real cigarette. The only thing digital about a PV, from the ones I've seen so far, may be the display. It is the technical perfectionist in me that was a little bugged, but that has been absorbed by my excitement to just quit smoking. I don't care right now what it's called. :)

However, I am still new to this. Perhaps there is more digital to this than I know at this point.

Someone recently made a comment about being able to smell the fresh raindrops on the grass and soil for the first time in years, and it made my eyes tear up because I had recently experienced the same scenario. Made me realize we need to slow down and learn to savor the small, insignificant, yet precious moments in our lives.
