Then how does "trouble" happen though? You'd have to do something about it to get them in trouble, that is if you wanted trouble lol.
Why not just change the password so people can't "log in" to your wireless connection?
Not that they would. In the case of jj, she's allowing the neighbor "in" ?

Some people get really ...... off if they find someone stealing their bandwidth. And if I understand correctly, there are ways it can be tracked down to exactly whomever is using it.

Disconnect would probably be better than me at explaining the exactness of it.

I just know it is illegal and can carry some pretty hefty fines and depending on the seriousness of it, jail time. I also know cable companies don't like it when someone isn't paying so they are very happy to help find any offenders.

good morning every1... thank goodness for free wifi at DD.. Thanks to every1 for the offers of help. I am ok . Was weird going to unemployment office today, I have never been unemployed since a graduated from high school in 1990. The only thing that bothers me is the chief could have told me a month ago about possible layoff so I could have started job searching, I mean after all I do have 3 kids 2 in college .. Hope every1 is having a good morning I will be logging in when ever I can..be well
There he is!

Oh, and the wifi thing is big trouble because its considered 'unauthorized access to computer systems'. Federally (and in most states) it is punished by laws written when only banks/defense/etc had "computer systems", by people who don't (and didn't) understand them. So (especially in a mandatory-sentencing area) you can get more time for using the neighbor's wifi without permission than for breaking into their house and robbing them..

(ETA: For a recent, tragic example, look up the Aaron Swartz story. He was threatened with decades in jail for downloading free documents he was legally allowed to access and publishing them, which was also legal. The federal DA ran him so hard he ended up committing suicide rather than risk going behind bars for decades.)
