I had several hamsters over the years as a kid, and I can say that they do poop where they eat, lol. Gross little creatures. But so cute! And they stuff their cheeks full of food. Adorable. It's a trade off. 
Mine always kept their food on the other side of the cage from the potty corner...
I would give it a baby carrot and watch it shove the whole thing in it's pouch... kinda like this:

I had a hamster! We came home one night and found it had gotten out of it's cage! We thought the dog ate it..... we finally found it hiding behind the fridge!
