No, not supposed to be a gap. Your carts should have 2 flat and two rounded sides...the flat side fits lengthwise over the bridge in the atty. Sometimes when a cart hits the bridge it will stick, turn the cart until it fits in correctly. Also, manufacturing differences occur that sometime cause a difference between the atty and cart, they may just be a really tight fit. I have found that my LR attys are just a little bit bigger than my regular ones and they have a tendency to not fit well. With my regular attys, they fit in with a slight "poppiing" noise. Not that I use them anymore since going to the e2 lol.

Carts aren't universal size, you may have one intended for a different PV. The cart filler needs to make contact with the atty so the juice gets to the atty. You can pull the stuffing out and drip a few drops directly on the atomizer if for some reason the cart isn't fitting. You can do that with the stuffing in, too. The atty just needs to stay wet for the device to make vapor.

I have tons of 510 stuff since that is all I use. I have never had that issue. I run into the issue of my carts being too loose. I end up taking a soldering tip to the sides (lightly) to create a groove that makes them tighter. If you don't have carts that fit right PM me and I will send you a couple to try out and see if they are any better.
