Tried both TFA Double and Holy Holy Grail along with some embellishments of vanilla, Carmel and several tobaccos but nothing close to what originally got me on board. I even attempted to solicit buying the flavoring from the guy I buy it online from (he said he was the producer) but he blew me off. I guess it's cheap enough at $3.25 per 30ml 6nic to my door if I buy a 15 promo pack. His is still a touch too sweet for me. I guess I should take a shot at the Asian RY4 even though I've only heard bad things about it but I am getting this stuff in the Philippines so there is that. Any DIY RY4ers in the DC area I could show this stuff to and maybe get me on track ? I am aging my batches 2 months plus

I don’t like ry4 myself but I can tell you what little I know:
Ry4 (Runyon 4) was one of the very first ecig flavors. It was a Chinese attempt at a tobacco flavor using a combination of food flavorings and is tuned to the mainland Chinese palate. Ry4 is very much a love it or hate it flavor. To me it tastes like caramel and green pepper.
There are many many flavorings called Ry4 these days. Lots of different companies have an ry4 flavoring and they’re all a bit different. Which one the guy is using is the “secret”. You can simply buy a bunch of tiny bottles of different RY4s to test and see if you get lucky. Could get expensive, there are a lot of them

Exactly. Ry4 is typically a tobacco with caramel and vanilla. However, everyone has their own take on it. My all time fav is CaRnY4 by G2 Vapes. No one has succeeded in cloning it, not even close and I suspect it's a highly guarded secret.

You'll need to be more specific on the flavor profile so we can help.

I started on RY4 years ago. I am not a fan of it anymore. I do like Hangsen RY3 though. For tobacco flavors, Hangsen is the best IMO. I believe Dakang the original Ruyan blend, check out their RY4. I used to use Holy Holy Grail. That was when I used 18mg. Might try it again now. I liked their Blackjack (both regular and wine) and Holy Vanilla. Lately I mostly use Purilum Sweet Tobacco as a base. I really like 5% PST with 2% Ducat Gold.

The first time I hit it it tasted so familiar but can't put my finger on whether it was a sweet cigarillo or some sweet pipe tobacco. Sometimes thinking cinnamon, sometimes butterscotch, sometimes pepsin like Beeman gum and the smell reminds of a potpourri my ex use to burn around the holidays. Checked photos of Hangsen but way lighter in color than the SWEETCH which is like a tea color.

I tried a couple NETs but nah.

I find you do got to break up the RY4 or you lose the taste

TFA (the flavor apprentice) makes "Double RY4" which is very sweet and mild, and a good starting point for a custom flavor. I make my own, add a little "nutty" and some "creamy".
I buy direct from them - since I know I'll use it, I get big bottles of flavor and mix big batches...
I cut the strength down a bit from what I originally made...and I vape it all day every day.

I thought it was pretty much accepted that TFA's RY4 Double doesn't even have any tobacco flavouring in it, and it's just vanilla, caramel and EM or somesuch. I much prefer to use Holy Holy Grail as a base for taste (it's delicious on its own), but if I'm honest I don't detect any tobacco in that either. ATF's @fear Holy Grail inspired recipe "Cardinal" is well worth a try as he adds a couple of tobacco flavours, but I found it wasn't a good steeper and at its best for the first few weeks only. What worked for me was 9% Holy Grail and 3% (SC) Cohiba, steeped for a month+ and thereafter just keeps getting better as it ages. A lovely creamy bright tobacco RY4, more akin to a tobacco custard really at 3+ months.

The closest DIY recipe or oneshot I've tried to date (and I've tried many) to mimic smoking tobacco is probably ATF's @fear "Abuela" recipe. It is outstanding as a mango and vanilla infused premium cigar. Well worth a try if you are into DIY.

RY4 Double or Holy Holy Grail are great bases to build on and you just need to find and add your favourite tobacco flavours to them to create your ideal "RY4". I have just worked my way through most of the Flavorah range and I didn't find a "keeper" among them although there are some decent ones there. I am starting on Inawera next and I believe they use actual tobacco extract in many of their flavours, so I'm looking forward to starting on them, especially as I already very much enjoy their Am4a pipe blend standalone at 3% to 4%.

Hangsen(HS; a Chinese manufacturer) offers a line of RY concentrates (RY1-4). As the number goes up; the sweet (caramel, and vanilla notes) gets stronger, and the tobacco presence gets weaker. If RY4 is too sweet, you can try RY3 (or even RY2), and see if it is more to your liking. HS RY3 has a pretty loyal following here on ECF, from people who find typical (TFA RY4 Double, etc.) RY4s too sweet.

I've been enjoying the PST too, though not sure I've got the % right yet.

Do you mean you make your own TFA Double or do you mean you use it and add stuff to it?
Either way, would you share more details on your recipes?
