And I am willing to bet she is totally aware of the positive effects nicotine has on the brain and it's shown results for Alzheimers....

I guess I got lucky....I have a GREAT GP....wonder if it's cause he's not an MD, but a DO?

keelagirl, I think that has a LOT to do with it.

Many moons ago... I was delivered into this fine world by a DO and have sought them out anytime I've relocated. The only M(aniacal) D(emigods)s I've ever felt any human connection with have been those I know outside their dominion.

My doctor (a DO) totally understood when I said I had to start smoking analogs the last time. I told him, "I'd rather get up with a cigarette in my hand than not want to get out of bed at all." He said, "Whatever it takes," with total sincerity and understanding. That, coming from someone involved in the Phillip Morris studies of old -- that he can't talk about, of course. He's thrilled that I'm now vaping instead of smoking (woohoot!). He's also my brother-in-law, so I have a midwife for my annuals. :)

My GP said much the same thing to me. He went straight to "well its not approved by the FDA" I reminded him that I was told by my neurologist I just needed to get off carbon monoxide, not everything else. I love my current team of doctors and they are trying very hard to help me right now (I was recently diagnosed with MS), but it is too much to ask me to give up smoking cold turkey.

My best friend is a doctor (peds) and she thinks it is great and is recommending it to the smoking parents.

I agree with you guys about some doctors. I had a GP whoI actually overheard tell a drug rep he had already written rxs for her drug 5 time that day. I had an 11am appointment.

I don't know if all do, but I do know that when I worked at one of the hospitals here, they (docs) got what I call "kickbacks" from the drug comps when they used their drugs......

He went straight to "well its not approved by the FDA"

And I would have said..."well, let's see....how many FDA approved drugs have been pulled from the market in JUST the past 5 years????? FDA approval doesn't mean SQUAT...." Oh and let's not even get into the drugs that have been used in Europe...proven effective and OUR FDA refuses to approve them.......

Never the good ones, Joyce, never the good ones! If any DR makes you feel that way - then leave and leave knowing you are just "that" much smarter for realizing the MD's limitations! Where in WV? My brother is up by MD.

Kanza, I'm in the southern part of the state. Trust me, it's so rural, you've never heard of the little town. The best I can offer you is "near Beckley" and you may never have heard of Beckley. :)

saying that its not aproved by the fda is just a medical legal issue, many doctors including myself regularly use drugs off label for non intended uses that are not fda approved. however if you dont want to be sued over it, informing patient about that issue goes a long way and puts the ball in thier corner. kickbacks are, by the way, a thing of the past and went out with the eighties. they cant even give us pens now. although the occasional lunch if we listen to thier sales pitch is still around. personally i use the cheapest drug avaliable that will do the job with the least side effects. occasionally a new drug will get on my radar but only if it offers substatial benifits over what is already cheaply avaliable. most of my patients are far below the poverty line and a wallmart 4 dollar drug that will work isusually avaliable.

My Dr. prescribed Chantix and after I took it for awhile I felt like I was going crazy, I called him and told him that it was making feel like I wanted to hurt someone & he said 'well take it a few more days and see if that passes' ...after that I can't bring myself to go back to him, and I don't have the energy to try to find a new Dr.

sorry to hear that pixedust a lot of doctors have no compasion for smokers and most have never been one themselves. mood disorders and even suicidal thoughts are well known side effects of chantix and definatly reason to stop taking it. i should know i tried it before i started vaping and had every side effect in the book. best way to find a new doc is to ask your friends and relatives. usually there are a couple compasionate ones around.

A LOT of docs are horrible (or at least have a poor idea of how to motivate people). But not all.

My wife (who has never smoked) just mentioned to her doctor that I had quit smoking via e-cigs. The doctor gave my wife her email address and asked me to send her information on e-cigs so she could pass it along to her smoking daughter-in-law.

Thats the bones of it IMO, do your research and dont discount anything - then weigh up the potential benefits against the potential side effects. With champix the potential side effects are WAY worse than any potential benefit (just my research) - and BEWARE SLANT!!!!

Love to all you happy vapers!

Dnx

true the side effects are awful, but that bieng said i have had a lot of patients do great on the drug with no side effects. you do have to remeber that thay are potential side effects and not everyone will have them. now as far as how many people go back to smoking afterwards.....lol thats a whole other story

read my post again, I said potential side effects.

It's like playing with knives for fun - potential side effect: get cut up, potential benefit: have some fun.

The potential side effects outweigh the potential benefits with champix. I'm repeating myself.

Potential side effects: craziness, prolonged panic attacks years after taking them, bad dreams, etc etc...
Potential benefits: relatively small percent chance you could successfully quit smoking.

It's a no brainer for me, especially seeing as the percentage of long term cessation is far FAR lower than other methods. Hypnosis has a higher success rate AFAIK. and pv's have the highest.

Both of our Drs. told us that the nicotine addiction was less worrisome than caffeine addiction and were very pleased that we had quit smoking and neither of them minded that we said we intend to vape until they pull them from our cold dead hands.

It's just a matter of enlightening them. i no longer feel bad about what i may be doing to friends/family or pets. i feel good about myself. Get yourself into that frame of mind and the naysayers can go do stuff to each other.

I loved my dr when I lived down state. Moved 5 hours north and unfortunately my local options are limited. Luckily, at this point I am pretty healthy. If I had a serious concern, I would head down state. My personal opinion is that she is a pill pusher and would never make it in the big city but for routine stuff she is here. But I do think she is an idiot, of course I have thought that long before our discussion, this just sent me over the edge.
