I haven't lost a regular Joye 510 atty in a year (will be on the 18th). I've killed three of them - two on a 5 volt device and one from a dry burn gone wrong. I used to clean them the first 3 months -vodka soak- and still do if there's a drop in performance but I've found that using them on a true 3.7 peak volt device - Bartleby, Protege, cleans them as you vape - a 'wet burn'. I rarely clean any now. If one on a mega is not performing I'll put it on the Bartleby to 'clean' it. Then back to the mega and all is well.

Lost some LR attys but that's a different story.

Hey Kent - I hope you'll bare with me - I'm not really up on all the lingo and brand names. When you say you haven't lost an atty, but you have killed them, I'm not sure what you mean. What is the difference in losing one and killing one? I'm pretty much lost with everything you said after that too...

This is what I bought: Joye 510 Manual Battery 2 atomizers! Black (it didn't have the logo then, but same product). And I've bought juice and blank carts since then (blank carts so I could try all the fun free samples they give out without the menthol flavor of my usual).

I don't know what voltage it is or what Bartleby or Protege are (or who they are?).

If I were to clean my current atomizer with vodka, would that stop it from getting hot so quickly? If so, does cleaning it mean you just soak it and then let it dry?

Thanks!

Kill vs. die. I killed two 510 attys by not paying attention using them on a 5volt mod which runs a 510 atty at a high rate of current. A 'long' draw will kill a regular 510. I killed two this way in one day. ;-) Now I only use cartoz or the 901 (3.3 ohms vs. the 2.1 ohms of the 510) on the 5volt. I also killed one by doing a dry burn on a mega batt holding down the button until red hot and I went too long, killing it. None have of the others have 'just stopped working' - ie. "died" of old age. And are working well except for one that I inadvertently pulled the wicking out when I thought it was a strand from the cart filler. It doesn't perform as well as the others but still works.

Bartleby - box mod that has a 14500 batt that runs at 3.7volt (the regular 510 batt and the mega operates at 3.1volt even though it is 'rated' at 3.7v. ) Same with the Protege a tube mod.

Protege:
PureSmoker.com - USA Electronic Cigarettes & USA Made eLiquid!!!

Both vape at 'peak voltage' for hours vs. the 510/megas and even eGos but the eGo are close to competing vaporwise.

Cleaning: I clean by running attys on the peak voltage mods but when there is a drop in performance, I use 151 vodka. The build up on the coil or near the coil could cause a heating up but the 510 is a hot atomizer - ohms at 2.1 vs. 3.3 or 3.8 on the 901 and 801 respectively. So it runs hot but crud on the coil can make it even more 'resistant' and hotter. You need to either burn it off or dissolve it.

I've been able to repair a few atomizers that prematurely stop working (open circuit) or go high resistance (10 ohm - 100 ohm) by using a pair of micro tweezers and just jamming them around where the atomizer end connections are while hooked up to a digital multimeter. This seems to work well for atomizers that have a sudden change in vapor production.

Some of mine last months some don't but they are so cheap that I dont bother cleaning them I just get new ones. Maybe the ones I cleaned were already too far gone, but its never saved any of mine. I blow them out all the time as I drip (dont like messing with cart fillers lol), but if they get too dry that usually kills them.
Sometimes I leave mine without using them for a bit and that often kills them - a too dry bridge isnt good for a 510 (my 901s aren't so fussy lol) and I guess leaving them without vaping them dries them out too much. If I use them daily they are fine though (I have a few in rotation as some flavors just dont mix lol).

Wow! I just 'blew out' the two that I have. There was a lot of liquid coming out! Kinda gross... I'll do that more often from now on.

Well, getting all that out encouraged me, so I got a paper clip and tried to get the fuzz out of one of them. And now it doesn't work. I suppose that fuzz was the wick. I didn't mess with the other one more than blowing the liquid out. It looks kinda dirty in the atomizer and the fuzz around it looks like cart fibers, but I'm still going to leave it alone - at least until my new kit comes in (today when I get home or tomorrow).

I am getting much better vapor and it not getting as hot with the one I just blew out. Great advice!

This could be due to the juice that was in them getting dried up and disrupting the air flow.
Rinsing them out under very hot water and letting them dry sufficiently should fix them right up.
