Hi Terri...

Good looking first build! I seriously recommend you try the artistic wire coiling gizmo. Its inexpensive and really easy to master.

For your wick, trim the tails about 1/8" past the ends of the coil. It does not need to touch the deck... it will be submerged on juice when you squonk.
