Thanks for the kind words everyone!
I really meant 15 minutes from when I got the idea in my ba
throbe to back upstairs with the rack. Design and layout consisted of pinching a pencil and dragging it along the length of the wood to mark the rough center. Just guess at the center and hold the pencil, and drag it along.
I know from experience this is the part you will notice if its crooked! (if you don't mark the center) You can fudge anything else, no problem.
Forstner bits drill a lovely flat bottom hole. That's how come they stand up straight.

Not me, it was the drill bit.
The answer to every question is more and better tools, of course.

I could post pictures all day. I am not sure what you guys would like to see? I am an old guy. I have been making things all my life.
My bench is homemade. Most everything I have is homemade one way or another.
Here is the whole bench, if you want to see.
The vise is partly an old apple press screw and other metal parts I cut up, reshaped and welded back together.
The wood is partly quilted maple (from before anybody decided to glue it to electric guitar faces. It was considered trash wood then).
Some Pacific madrone (also wood nobody wants) Western Black oak (more wood nobody wants)
and a little actual black walnut!!! There is part of an old maple lab table in there too.
Here is a funny true story on plans.
When I was getting a new granddaughter well the girl needed someplace to sleep, didn't she?
So......... I drew up a detailed plan
This is what I built for her
