I tested a 18500 and 14650 and they both keep up fine with the caps. The 14500 seems to struggle.

Using a 10440 is just a really bad idea

Without the caps it's far worse than that...even with a 3 ohm atty and a best case of 'real' mah at 280 he was pulling well over 10C pulsed. It must have been one of the unprotected 10440 and hes lucky it didn't go nuclear on him.

Without the caps it can. The way it was explained to me is that is pulses higher current to step it up using an inductor. The cap is used to smooth out the pulses which reduces the stress on the battery and gives steady output.

This stuff is way beyond my pay grade so I rely on much more knowledgeable modders to guide me

Ok, so I went to RS looking for a .3ohm 1watt resistor and couldn't find one. Fricken RS, why don't they ever have anything I need.

Weird, I pulled one of my older 901 attys (SLB) that wasn't working so well out of mothballs and the flavor is exceptional! TH & vapor are great @ 5v. Guess the newer attys don't like 5v. I think I need some 801 attys...
