So, I was looking for a small-ish, cheap, rebuildable dripping atty. One of my local shops had the Totally Wicked DDA so I picked one up. I had my eyes on the Igo-L but couldn't find it locally and I wanted something to play with immediately (will probably still be getting an Igo-L). Well, this thing is cool. It came with a weird set of wicks, there were like 8 wicks with a kinda shoddy coil around it. Having watched tons of YouTube videos about rebuilding and making coils, I wanted to see if I could do better. So I took the coil out, straightened out the wire, grabbed a couple of the wicks and this is what I came up with:

firstcoil.jpg

Not spectacular. I'd like to think it's not bad for my first coil, and also considering I was using some wire that was already coiled. Anyways, I quickly realized that the design of this does not allow for the wicks to be on both sides of the coils, you won't be able to get the top back on. So, I fiddled with it. I pulled the wick through, which screwed up my coils, so I played with it more. I grabbed a tiny flat head and spread them a bit, then checked for hotspots. Well, the leg leading to the positive post heated up instantly and then the rest kind of followed suit shortly after. I fiddled some more, then I found that the other leg was too loose around the wick. So, more fiddling, more fiddling, more fiddling, and.. it's good! It all heated up evenly, so I dripped a couple drops onto the coil and fired, it all heated up evenly still! So I saturated, gave a couple toots.. Delicious. It metered out to ~2 ohms, but even at 3.8v it has a better throat hit than my 1.8ohm clearos. I am very very happy, and I'm definitely going to be delving deeper into the world of rebuildables. I wanted to try a micro coil, but not having any wire or wick except what the device came with (one prebuilt/pre-installed and then 3 replacement coils already coiled on wick (though strangely enough, only one, thicker wick.. and in the middle..)), I figured I should just wrap a normal coil.

So, you should expect to see me some more around this part of the forum :D
And here's a little video of the performance:

Erg, just realized after uploading, I did something I hate. I took the video in portrait mode. Oh well.

So this is a novel, sorry for that. If anyone has some tips and tricks I'd be more than happy to listen. Oh, and I'm probably going to get an RSST soon-ish as well, good call?

Yeah, I'll definitely be making some micro coils. I was even thinking about going with some cotton wicks but I'm a little hesitant. I'm going to be buying some wire tomorrow, if I stick with the silica, the stuff I got with the atomizer will hold me over for a little while. I still have 5 or so strands of the wick that came pre-installed, as well as the 3 longer wicks (that I could probably cut in half) that came as replacements. I have been following that micro coil thread, that's why I wanted to try it in the first place. But the stuff they gave me, I don't know, since it was already all coiled up it wasn't very easy to work with. That tutorial was very nice, gave me some ideas, and also has me thinking about a bottom feeder..

Thanks bro! Glad you liked the threads. Yeah, something about the fresh squeezed juice on demand aspect of a bottom feeder that is so attractive. Couldn't imagine vaping any other way. And don't settle, jump on the best you can get - REO.

Amazing vape, pocketable, durable, leak free and the easiest RBAs to master. You should drop in to the REOsmods forum here on ECF. It's a very active and vibrant forum with the most helpful, welcoming and freindly people you'll ever meet :) here's a link :)

But, but, but.. Then people won't refer to my PV as a Sonic Screwdriver anymore :(

Heh.. Only partially kidding. I was going to get an eVic and the SS JWrap.. But even though I'd look into the bottom feeders, until looking at that tutorial, I didn't thoroughly understand how it worked. I'm very visual and a look-inside-and-see-how-it-works kinda guy, and now it just seems like such an attractive idea. I'll keep playing around with my eGos for now and do some hard thinking.

Now I'm like itching until my B&M opens up and I can get some wire and work on a micro coil. Gonna get some "sterile rolled cotton" too... Oh goodness I'm falling into the rabbit hole.

I know your anxiety to build coils :). I did the same thing as you initially - bought a couple of feet of Kanthal from a B&M while I waited on my first RBA. Paid more for 2 feet than I did for my 100' roll from temcoindustrial :)

Don't worry about the rabbit hole - it's not too deep once you get going. But it can be a great little hobby.

feel free to ask any questions with your micro builds, no matter how silly you think they are. After seeing your first coil, id say your gonna do great :)

Had a co-worker grab me some 30ga wire from our B&M while he was picking up juice, I now have it and wrapped 11 wraps on one of those little "electronics" screwdrivers. Exactly (or damn close) 1/16" OD, they're not touching but they are very close.. I keep scrunching them together and holding them for a while, but they're not getting any closer. I have a hard time believing I'm going to be able to wick this thing, it's so small lol. Now I'm just dying to leave work, get some cotton, and go home and tinker. Pics and stuff later!

Edit, here's a picture of it on the screwdriver!

Too much wick? Should I be rolling it more? In any event, it's working sooo much better than the other coil on the silica. Taste is outrageously amazing. It measured out to 1.8 ohm exactly (which is what I wanted), and I've got it on just a regular eGo battery at 3.8 or whatever it's hitting at.. actually let's check.. Okay so it's 3.98ish, it was recently charged. So nice. Plus I think it looks nicer than a loose 5 wrap. Micro coils all the way! Now I want to get that rsst.. and that igo-l.. and an aga t2.. and..

way way WAY too much wick on the right side. You want the thickness of the wick to be the same for the entire length. You also want to be able to pull it thru the coil easily, feeling just slight resistance as you pull it thru.

Your coil is very good though. Great work bro :)

I thought it might be too much, but seeing as how it can be rewicked rather easily, I figured I'd give it a go and wait for some input. It's hard to get a piece small enough lol. I'm grabbing chunks of cotton.. Had to keep pulling little bits off, came up with this:

Better? :)

Edit: oh my god it hits even harder now!

Much better :). Less is more with cotton. Here's one of mine with a week old wick and a month old coil. I keep the wicks short :)

That looks massive compared to mine. Same size coil? 1/16" OD? Is that atomizer just smaller/differently proportioned?

The atty is small. The diameter is about 15mm. Maybe just a big picture :). I always wrap around a 16 ga needle which is 1/16" or 1.6 mm :)
