How long has the man been a smoker and how much was he smoking?

VG is thick/Heavy - Nothing like Smoke. NOT the Best choice to start out a LONG Term Smoker.

Subtank at 9wats is like Sucking liquid through a Straw - Raise to 14w minimum.
Reduce Air Flow for MTL vape.
Talk to him about Slow Easy Draws.

Yep and use a narrow bore drip tip instead of the wide one that comes with the STM.

The subtank always hits a bit too hard for me. I run the rba at 2.0 ohms and 8 watts, smallest air hole, and more narrow drip tip. It still pumps out more and harsher than other tanks...at least for me. Don't get me wrong, it's a good solid tank. However, I much prefer the Ego One (with the clr coil) for my vaping style.

So you might just try some other tank.

You could also tell him to try the 0.5 ohm coil that came with it. I tried the higher one myself and found it to hit way too harsh. He will also need to raise his wattage to at least 15 watts. He may want a little higher. It also takes practice too. Also a sub-tank is not something I'd introduce to a new vapor. They hit a lot harder then the protanks and other regular tanks. I have found people who can hit them fine when new, but most tend to cough at first.

The inhalation technique is different from smoking. I had a lot of trouble my first week vaping while I adjusted. Long, light inhales, like a summer breeze.

I think the high vg might be a problem, too. If he's an older, long time smoker, a 50/50 juice would be better.

He is using high VG juice without flavour, 9 watts evic vtc mini, with a kanger subtank with 1,5 ohm occ coil.

Aside from reducing nic content, what do you suggest I do?
Get rid of that 1.5 ohm coil the last time I got a pack of those it was the harshest coils I ever vaped, I have no idea what's going on with them. Put in the 1.2 ohm vertical coil. And run the lowest watts stamped on the coil. Or less.

How does he draw from the tank? High Vg is thick, so MTL with the type of airflow on a Subank, can be too much. Even on the smallest airflow setting. I also suggest raising the watts for the same reason. 14-15w is a good start. Vg vaporizes at a slightly slower rate than Pg. If he can't tolerate higher watts, then he needs to use a thinner juice.
sorry about the messed up quote, my phone likes to mess those up.

Vaping has a different "feel" to the throat than smoking did.
We learned to smoke...now we learn to vape.
Tell him to not hit it like he did a cigarette...to use slower, more gentle draws :)

Thanks will try your suggestions. My plan was to go away from the pre-build coils and do our owns, what do you suggest for him? prefer around 1.0 ohm, but clueless on which wire to get.

I applaud your enthusiasm, but Slow your roll...
Learn to use the device properly...FIRST.

Have a good time

It gets easier as one gets away from smoking. Also the initial catch in the throat doesn't get worse with use like smoking, could be just getting past that threshold.

Oddly enough, I wonder if flavor would avoid the need to hit it as hard, more sense of getting something earlier. Didn't say nic level, definitely an issue, some levels are just impossible. PG is known for throat hit but high VG pushes up the vaporization temperature so can also be too much. Also reduces wick power handling in a tank; more need to prime the coil and give it time.

The 1.5's on those are made for less power and vapor, but could just be bad. Don't have one...

Skold: best I can tell you're talking a completely different Kanger product, and maybe user error too.
