My K2 mechanical mod only works with a kick installed

You may have to take the switch apart and adjust/stretch the Push Button Spring. I have a UD UDT-v8 with a spring as the battery's (+) connection. If there's a spring, try to adjust or stretch it some.
It is possible that the Kick has pushed the internal plus pin up inside. If you were using Flat Top Batteries, maybe try using Button Top Batteries. But only without the Kick now, as the combination may only make it worse.
Another option may be to get some Battery Magnets and put them on the Battery (+), to act as extensions. Battery Magnets are available in a range of thicknesses.
But whatever you do, be careful not to put something inside that will push an internal plus pin up even father. It is a Telescoping Mech, so maybe it was screwed down too far on the Kick. If the 510 section comes off, see if you can adjust the plus pin. I also have a UDT-V10, and the plus pin has two screws; one to adjust connection fit to the tank's 510, and another to adjust the connection to the battery's (+). Look for this kind of stuff. If the 510 section cannot be removed, you may be able to press the 510 (+) down from the outside. But be careful not to move it much.
I don't have a K2 Mech, so hopefully others will chime in.
