I'm pretty sure it's the spring causing the problem but I can't be too sure. It's one of three, I know that much. It consists of three parts- a screw, a spring, and a threaded button.

A week after I got it, my Screwdriver stopped working completely and I paniced thinking it was defective, couldn't identify the problem, thought it was my atty's and then thought it was my batteries and I came to find that the spring needed to be pulled out a little.

My question is (sorry for all the rambling) How often does the Screwdriver switch need to be replaced with a new one? (in general)

I'm not sure- I got it from TW. the switches are cheap enough where I could get some for just incase but like you said- I would think it SHOULDN'T need replacing. The screw and threaded cap seem very sturdy but who knows. Everything about this PV is strictly mechanical so parts should be easy enough to find and if it's just the spring I'm sure I could find a spring the same size and gauge right? Bleh

I'm also having a problem with mine and I have pulled out the wire in the top and then it works, but I'm afraid I might be stretching it out too much and it will break?

Yeah, same here... I emailed TW. I'm within the warranty thank god but I'm afraid this will happen again. Seeing how cheap the switches are for sale on their website makes me think they make the switches to crap out on you early... I might just make my own switch with a thicker gauge spring or something... Although I'm not handy at all, I might be able to do it though considering how desperate I am.

Hope you get yours worked out cause I know first hand how much it sucks having a faulty switch!
