My thoughts and concerns after 80 hours!!

So thanks to several great posters replies and in particular to SouporVapor who has been incredible, I finally went ahead and received a 510 kit with accessories on Wednesday and started vaping the same day at 5.30p.m. After 40 years of smoking analogs, it has not been easy as I am watching my wife smoke whilst I am making an effort here......typical, as she got some nicotine on her tongue and it burnt her, so she is put off.........anyway, received an auto and a manual in the kit and I definately prefer the manual...............

Regardless, everybody seems to have any idea whats best for each individual and this board is incredible and have learnt so much........hell, I must stop waffling:confused: and get to the point. Maybe it's because I only have menthol carts and some menthol liquid(also a few carts of MB lights) that although I am getting my nicotine fix(perhaps thats wishful thinking) to a certain extent, I am getting headaches and a nasty metalic taste in my mouth..plenty of vapor, some throat hit, if I really drag myself stupid, but although it's early days, still don't feel the best and actually feel very tired................What exactly am I taking into my lungs and have there been any tests conducted to prove that what I am doing now is "healthier"(not sure if this is the correct word) than analog smoking? Tried to do a search here and would be grateful if you could supply me with some links on long term possible health hazards(yes I realize this vaping is in it's infancy to a certain extent). I just want to know, what this could be doing to my system............
Perhaps I am having withdrawal affects here as well, cos I can tell you that I sure have been tempted to reach for the real thing but am really surprised at my will-power as normally it's pathetic, so I have to give credit to the 510..............tried the pyramid T bag method and that is great, but overfilled with liquid a couple of times, so still in the learning process................and look forward to trying out new flavors.......the carts in the 510 are tiny and if you take out the wadding and replace with your own choice, you realize that they are even smaller than they look.

Instructions for charging battery are confusing..mine charge after 45 mins to an hour..well they turn from red to green, but others have said it takes 4-5 hours to do this properly?? What about overcharging?
One last thing, since I have the man and auto, one has the menthol, one has the MB light and i switch alternatively(not all the time) between one and the other...could I be overdosing to a certain extent.....................?

Sorry for all the questions..........sure you have been in the same position and moved on rapidly.........................anyway, 80 plus hours and counting....I suppose thats about 90 smokes...I unlike others am not counting the amount of money saved as I haven't quite worked that one out yet and not really interested as more interested in the health aspect here and what I am really doing?????????
Thx..........

Hello,

I am sometimes plagued by that nasty metallic taste as well and the only thing I can think of at the moment is that my atomizers need cleaning. I have just begun doing this by running hot water over them from the tap, then soaking them for a couple of hours in 150-proof Everclear (the highest alcohol content that can be purchased legally in my area), then giving them a goodly long time afterward for the alcohol to evaporate. It appears to leave no residue. Afterward, the taste is somewhat better. If there's some other reason (a possible reaction to PG, due to "over-vaping"?), I don't know what it is.

Regarding battery charging, here's one technical person's view of the subject:

Charging lithium-ion batteries
(batteryuniversity.com/partone-12.htm)

I have generally followed manufacturers' instructions regarding the initial charge. Per the above referenced article, I suppose it is possible that the 8-hour-plus charge they recommend is unnecessary, but I've decided to proceed as if the manufacturers' recommendations were correct. One of them (as I recall this recommendation appears in Joye 510 documentation) suggests an eight-hour charge, followed by one hour of "vaping," and then an additional one-hour charge. I don't know why they want it that elaborate, though; I've never seen that kind of recommendation accompanying any other lithium-ion battery.

There is a lot of good info about the studies done since the 1940's on inhaling Propelene Glycol, which is the base for most of the commercial liquids available (some are VG based, but unless you bought something labeled VG liquid what you have is PG), you can find it on vapersclub.com. Check it out and you will be reassured.

it is possible depending on what strength liquid you are using that you are slightly over dosing which could be what's causing the headache. The metallic taste is from trying to vape to quickly with the 510. You are not allow enough time for the fluid to wick into the atty and you are essentially getting a semi dry burn. To help get rid of this drop a few drops directly on the atty bridge and let it sit for a few moments then the metallic taste should be gone.

Sorry to hear about the juice in the mouth and putting the wife off. It happened to my wife and I too. Problem is (usually) overfilling or simply sucking too hard/quickly. E-cigs need to be dragged slowly, to give the liquid enough time to vaporize.

Others above have pointed out some of your other issues so I will leave those alone as best as my Percocet-induced short term memory will allow. :)

I have been vaping exclusively for 20 days now (quit the analogs about 1 week after I got the e-cig). For many, the desire for a real cigarette does happen. And Ill be honest, every now and then I want one too (though part of that is because I am mostly vaping zero nic to help a spinal fusion heal per doctor orders). But even before I switched to zero nic, I still wanted a real one too. I think that will pass. Your headaches could be that you could be over-doing it with the nic (depends on what strength you are using), or as others have said, you could try VG vs PG solutions. You can find more on that in this forum.

As for really craving an analog, I can't say I ever got a headache (so don't think I over-did the nic), but before I switched to zero nic and I was really wanting an analog, I would drip for about 20 minutes. Gave me a nice little buzz and didn't want an analog at all.

Dripping is dropping one or two drops of liquid directly on the atomizer (or "bridge") and putting a blank cart on and smoking it that way. You get massively strong hits, and a surprising number of them for only a couple drops. Once you've tried it, you will be hard-pressed to go back to carts. I still use carts for convenience, but for a quick vaping fix and if I am just sitting around, I prefer to drip. There is a bit of an art to that too. One tip: When dripping, if you take a drag and hear gurgling, you have too much liquid in there. Tip the e-cig back (mouthpiece side DOWN) and take some slow puffs. Eventually it will clear up a bit and then it'll hit a sweet spot. Perfect vapor and throat hit. :) Oh, and I would not recommend dripping (or overfilling carts) when using an auto battery. They are not sealed at the connector end and tend to short out from liquid getting into them. If you decide you like the 510 and want to use it for a while, I would recommend another 1 or 2 manual batteries.

There is a TON of info on this forum and I have spent HOURS (DAYS) here reading all about these things. Of course I am currently off work so I have plenty of time for that. Anyway, my point is, take your time with them, learn what you can from the forum, and have patience. They are not a direct replacement for a cigarette but they are the closest thing out there. And for MANY people, they no longer want a real cigarette at all. VG and PG have been proven safe over the years, and while there still may be some unknowns, one thing we do know is that REAL cigarettes contains THOUSANDS of chemicals and are known to kill. You decide which is safer. Many here have been vaping for months and months if not a year or more and everyone I have seen has posted remarkable improvements in their overall feeling and health.

Good luck and welcome to the forum and vaping. I hope your wife will give it another try.

Thx to everyone for the wonderful encouragement and info and again to SouporVapor for really going out of her way to advise on all sorts of things..she even is sending me various flavs of juice:thumbs:. Well, this is the first morning that I haven't rushed for my analog with my coffee..........although gums feel very sore and bled a bit last night after cleaning them....hmmmmmmm:confused:
Been wanting to ask..how do you set up the........."No smoking for xxx days and saved xxx Dollars" sign?

:).thx Bran

:).thx Bran

There may be a number of posts you need to make before you can do this (10 or 15) but.....

1) go to SmokeFree Quitmeter and enter your details. I'm not so sure you need to enter an email address (I don't think I did).
2) You will get results containing BBCode.
3) In another browser window (so you can go back to the BBCode), go to your User CP on this forum and click the option to edit your signature.
4) In the signature editor, click on the 'Insert Image' icon to insert an image. For the image URL, use what is between the
tags in the BBCode.
* Instead of #4, you can also try just copying the entire BBCode section and pasting it into your signature editor, but I do'nt know if that works or not.

When finished, there is a button to test your signature. If it isn't right, try again. :)

If this is wrong, someone correct me, but I am pretty sure this is what I did. :)

Don't forget that you are not only addicted to nicotine but you are also addicted to all of the chemicals in the analogs. I never had nicotine widthdrawl but I did go thru a nasty chemical detox when I quit smoking cigs. After about 2 weeks you will get more satisfaction from your PV but hate to say this, it will never replace the feeling you got from analogs and you will crave a cig for a long time to come. After a month or 2 you will start coughing out the tar and feeling better yet. Stick with it and you will see. I wouldnt worry too much about over-doseing unless you are vapeing 30ml of 60mg liquid a day. Your body is going through a healing proccess and the detox part will take a couple weeks. GL and hang in there.

ok guys..thx again........been reading literally 100's of posts over the last few days..what a forum, what an education.. congrats to the mods for setting this up for everyone..I am hanging in there and duh....just noticed that I haven't been putting my carts flash with the attys(always left a gap of about 2mm) and no wonder I get some nic in my mouth occassionally, mind you, I still get a sort of gurgling hissing sound when drawing in, so must remember not to fill more than a few drops at a time I suppose, unless this is normal for the 501?
I still seriously wonder though if I am vapeing correctly as having always taken the analogs deep into my lungs, I may be trying too hard here and am getting a headache on each vape........... Mind you, I have decided to do all this at once....not drinking my usual beers and not eating as much, and I love my food.....so no wonder feeling a bit strange here.........wife thinks I have lost it(she is probably right:D) mid life crisis:wub:...............but I sure luv this 501.................anyone got stuff from Wicked in the UK and your comments?

Best...Bran.

Minor sizzling sounds are pretty typical, especially with a freshly topped cart. However, just as with dripping, obvious gurgling sounds with a cart imply an over-filled cart. This can sometimes cause juice in your mouth, but for me it usually results in very little vapor. My solution for that is as stated earlier..... tilt the cig with the cart side lower than the "cherry" and slowly vape as normal. Slowly the gurgling should quiet down or stop at which time it should be back to normal.

It's kind of funny.... as you learn the quirks in these things, you know just how to tilt it depending on what it is or isn't doing until you get it working right. :D

As for your headaches... what strength are you using? Do you know the MG or at least low/med/high? Just curious.

Well on my liquid bottle it's says low(menthol)... on the carts, doesn't say and I don't know if it's PG or VG? Thx for the lowering trick(obvious when it's spelt out to you:D)................hope this headache thing goes away..it's just like a dull pain over the eyes..goes away after a few mins and then when I vape....comes back again. Obviously will have to learn who the most reliable suppliers are............

Certainly shouldn't be too much nicotine then. Where did you get the 510 from? I assume the samples came with it. Someone might be able to tell you who made it (so you can at least avoid it in the future).

It's a bit expensive, but I kind of like Ecopure. You can get that in the states from www.innovapor.com and www.cignot.com or directly from the UK from www.intellicig.com (but it took forever for me to get my order). Cignot also offers Joye branded PG liquid (though no menthol), just in case you don't like Ecopure (which is VG). Of course LOTS of sites sell their own PG liquid so you have many choices in PG. Ecopure states they are are purest smoke juice you can get. I do like it for what it's worth, but again, it is a bit pricey. Ecopure comes in regular and rich "tobacco type" flavors, menthol, and fresh/pure (a very subtle and clean taste). Compare the Ecopure to the Joye liquid on Cignot's site and you'll see what I mean by prices though. Of course this is all assuming your headaches are related to the juice and/or base (PG or VG).
