Hey all,

Im coming from a slightly different background then most of you. Ive never really smoked cigs, but enjoy a tobacco pipe or hookah very frequently. Im looking to get completely away from tobacco for health reasons but still like to smoke while drinking, socially, ect.

I have a couple questions for you guys, but a little background first. Ive always been a tinker'r so was thinking about jumping into a mod right away. Being a classic car kinda guy(Simple), also looking mainly at mech's. Really, really like the look of the Reo Grande. IS this to much for a newbie such as myself? I like the compactness(not so long), no need for a exterior tank, and can easily run cart or ato's. Would this be a smart choice for a new vaper? Are there any similar mech's out there that i am missing?(round the same price range of course)

I also was seriously considering" THE DON". is it true they are no longer made?

Hi and welcome to ECF.

If you're looking for a quality vape nothing beats dripping and the Reo is an auto dripper. Of course all this stuff has a learning curve but it's basically all the same thing.

The Don was my first PV and unless you are a heavy smoker it's really not advised- the main benefits are it's durable and has long battery life- something you really wouldn't require. When I bought it 1 1/2 yrs ago it was great but since then many other better products available. It is still available:
Megalodon (The Don) **NEW VERSION** - Moju Republic

Welcome to the forum! I've read decent things about the Reo, but never personally used one. If you haven't really vaped before you might want to try something less expensive to begin with just to see if it's something you would really do. There are some ego kits out there that are pretty cheap to get into like the ego-t. Or even just the couple dollar e-cigs to see if it's in the ballpark of something you could enjoy.

Thats a fair statement. I will say that I have used a friends cheap E-cig and was pleasantly surprised. I may differ from most people, when purchasing products, i look for quality and something i can grow into. I hate buying cheap, and then upgrading a few months down the road.

The Durability, long battery life, and simplicity are all things that attracted me to the don. I'm not necessarily attracted to the idea of smoking out of some shiny, chrome, light sabre, blinky light, looking thing. I like the ruggedness, bare bones approach to the Don. Maybe you have an better recommendation?
Thanks!

The Don is limited to 3.7 volts and is quite large BUT can be broken down into a smaller stealth PV by removing a section of the tube and using a smaller battery. At the time these Mechanical Mods came out the major complaint with other PVs was the battery life. Now with all the new PVs available with far more vaping options the Mech Mods are not that popular.
Size without delivery device ( holds and vaporizes juice)- add another 2"?
Battery Info: 100 mah= 1 hr vaping before recharge is needed
Full size= 4"- battery is 18650- 2200+ mah
Stealth Mode= 2 3/4"- battery is 18350 = 800- 1200 mah

Edit: Considering they're asking 98.6456 U.S. for the DON they are WAY out of line IMO.

Thank you, All great information and something i need to think about!

I did pick this up from the link you gave me, "Compatible battery sizes in 3.7 Volt format include: 18650; 18350; 17670; 14650, 16340; CR123A to name a few. While if you want to experience some higher voltage vaping, the Don caters for 5 Volts (our own custom 5V battery); 6 Volts (2 x CR123A 3V); or 7.4 Volts (2 x 16340 3.7V)"

with all the things considered, what would be your recommendation for a first mod?

You're welcome If you do buy a Mod the most important piece will be the quality of the batteries. AW and Panasonic are great batteries but for safety sake you should only buy protected batteries- they have circuitry within them to prevent catastrophic failure- explosion and overheating are rare but the last thing you want happening with something hanging out of your mouth. There are also safe chemistry batteries.
Here's a reasonable price Mech Mod:
$40 but only aluminum Smoktech Telescope
$55 in Stainless Steel SMOKtech TELESCOPE Adjustable Mechanical Battery Mod - STAINLESS [gv-SMOKtechTELESCOPE-STNLS] - $54.95 : GotVapes.com, E-cigarette Supplies - Atomizers Cartomizers Mods Juice and more
Here's a review by highly regarded PBusardo- last 3 mins is Turkey Time and not worth watching

To be able to stack batteries safely you have to follow certain procedures and constant testing- not much fun. To turn a Mech Mod into VV you can buy a kick for $50.00 BUT you have to make sure it can fit properly into the Tube Mod. In this day and age I would highly recommend a VV as there's just so many more options available IMO.

Thanks again for all your help. Maybe i should look more into the VV or VW models... the more i get into this, the more im finding people love them. Its kinda against my nature to go with a microchip over something mechanical, but i ought to at least look into them.

Yes I always advise people to take their time in choosing the right PV as we all have diff needs BUT in choosing a PV we would hopefully buy something that we can grow into rather than out of. I see that as an issue with many new vapers immediately purchasing additional PVs to match their growth. Also remember some VV are expensive because they are quality. I just sold a Provari for just about what was paid for it a yr ago. Just ordered a Stainless Steel Vamo + 4 high quality 18650 batteries from China for $57.00 shipping incl...I'll have fun with it but really (finger crossed) don't expect it to last beyond 6- 12 months.
