Hey Gang,

Just started to DIY after ordering a kit from Dawn and some flavors from eciggexpress. Made a batch of cinnamon, and it etched my new polycarbonate tank. I am using a 50/50 mix for both my nic and filler. The cinnamon batch was at 14% flavoring. Easy fix, just added some more pg/vg to thin it out. Then I tried to make a batch of ripe banana from TPA signature series. Sites page said to start with 10% flavoring, and work up from there. Well made a 60ml batch...6ml flavoring, 18 ml nic, and 36 ml of pg/vg and threw in 3 drops of ethyl maltol. Smelled great, so I put some in one of my other tanks..... The tank cracked after about 30 seconds from top to bottom without me even vaping it. Pulled it out with a syringe, and it froze up.... Then "stupidly" I put it into another tank, and after a minute, small cracks started to appear in it as well.... So I am down three tanks, got a lot of juice I cant vape, and am getting frustrated..... any suggestions????

I don't use tanks, but ripe banana from TPA is my #1 favorite flavor! The only flavor I've tried with excessive acid would be Green Apple for TPA, gives me a sore throat sometimes. I think it's citric acid in the Green Apple.

You can always send an email to TPA and she'll reply pretty quickly. She's even given me lists of ingredients when I was concerned about artificial sweeteners. It would be nice for you to find out what the cause of this is.

If you have allot of that ripe banana flavor left I'll take it and pay for shipping :)

This might not be a good alternative but it's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head. Pull the spike out of your atty. Convert one of your tanks into a makeshift drip tip by taking off the tip of the mouth piece and drip. I ordered an Ego tank a few months ago and within 3 days I had mine dissected and was using it to drip. If you're in love with your tank, I know this doesn't sound like much of a solution but it will work.

i believe he is talking about a polycarbonate carto tank, not the ego style tanks, but i could be mistaken.

there is a thread going in the general e-smoking section that has a list (always expanding) as to what liquids have been known to crack polycarbonate tanks. tpa ripe banana is on that list.

Oooppss... my bad, yes it was two of my polycarbonate tanks.... already ordered two new ones, just looking for some advice on how to blend it down to keep from doing this in the future....

I had been thinking that PG was the culprit of my sore throats until recently. I have found that apple and any flavor with citric acid will make my throat sore if it is mixed at too high of a ratio.

I also like the PA Ripe Banana but have not used it in any of my poly tanks because I know the cracking risk. It does make me wonder how good the flavors that will crack a tank really are to vape.
I try and stay below 10% flavor in all of my mixes but with things like Ripe Banana, Apple, etc I stay at 8% or less. The only thing that I could think of to try (if you want to risk losing another tank) is using the Ripe Banana at about 5% and see how that goes :) If you do try it please let us know.
Good luck.

Unfortunately it is the acid in the flavor so unless you want to mix it with other flavors to a point around 5% banana, it will crack it everytime. If you want a solid banana flavor where the flavoring is over about 5% banana you need to make a syringe mod tank because the plastic in the syringes does not break down or crack with the malic acid. Or just dont use a tank for your banana. Sorry if this wasn't the answer you wanted to hear :(

Sorry to derail this thread a bit.. crk0756 hope you found that list and your answer.

So about the malic or citric acid in our juice. The sore throat issue I was having only happened a few times. The first and second time it was the beginning of throat/sinus infection that took the usual 5-7 days to clear up. The third time I had a sore throat that lasted 12 hours and went away the next day. I was using TPA Green Apple all three times. I can't say for sure if it was the acid in the flavor causing the soreness because I got a "cold" right afterwards. I figured I was just getting sick and it couldn't be the juice. I've gone through 200+ ml's of Green Apple with only a few sore throats, but I can feel the acidity and slight soreness whenever I vape it. I really like the flavor but have moved on since.

There may be something to this acidity causing sore throats and possibly messing up the pH levels in the mucous that protects our bodies from outside invaders like the cold virus. I'd sooner just stop using a flavor that gives me a sore throat than go to the trouble of measuring the pH of my mucous or whatever lol. I like to use 10% Green Apple. Banana has never given me a sore throat and I vape that at 15%

FA Forest Mix. FA Peppermnit and PA Apple have all given hubby and I sore throats if we mix above about 5% So I do believe that certain flavors do indeed irritate the throat. JMO

BTW- Forest Mix is one of the worst and one that I love the most :(

hmmm I've wondered about this before. Could we ask TPA to supply us DIY'ers with pure flavor molecules, or at least supply them to us cut down with PG to a useable level. After all, it's not really DIY flavor if it's mixed with things we don't want or need. A good example of this is EM, don't like it. It's listed as a flavor in the ingrediants of TPA strawberry and many others. Isn't EM a sweetner?? I have the list of actual ingredients for TPA strawberry supplied to me by TPA. I don't want to post it but will pm if anyone is interested?

Oh well, We all deserve to know what we're vaping. It also helps explain what's going on.

concentrated flavors are blends made of aroma/flavor molecules.
very often they are the same molecules that exist in the fruit.
some of the molecules lend a sweet effect, such as ethyl maltol, maltol etc
there is no "sweetener" as such in the flavors, with the exception of where sucralose is
added and listed in the ingredients part of the description.
there is no "sweetener" in pear, green apple, etc.

below is a simple formula for a strawberry flavor - so in this particular case
the sweetness is coming from a few of the ingredients

Furaneol
Ethyl Maltol
Aldehyde C-16 STRAWBERRY
Fraistone
Methyl Cinnamate
Alcohol - 190 proof

lol guess I haven't visited the TPA site in a while. Nice to see the new section for pure flavors. Not too many choices yet, but I imagine there will be. That's if you can deal with the complexities of ppm and such. We should be grateful to Linda for understanding our needs and catering to us :)

I'm sure it'll turn out to be a less is better scenario wrt ingredients. I mean, I don't get a sore throat from eating a green apple or peppermint tea. My plastic cup doesn't crumble when I pour apple juice in it either...

I was also going to suggest making a syringe mod tank as a previous poster recommended, if you want to keep vaping these flavors with a tank. The syringe plastic is a different type of plastic and shouldn't crack. I don't vape either of those flavors though, so I don't have any personal experience with using them in a syringe tank.

Thanks for all the helpful input gang, :thumb: Just blew my mind when the first tank frosted, and the second one split. I guess I will have to search for a syringe that is wide enough to accomodate my stainless tank ends so that I can still use my cartos. The banana batch that I made is now reserved for direct dripping, dont want to take a chance putting it in my vapemate for fear of the viewport cracking... I copied the most recent list of flavors/juices that are on the post about tanks so that I will hopefully not make that mistake again. I also wrote on my reciepe cards that it is not safe for polycarbonate to remind myself in the future...
