Hi All,

Recently I acquired three very interesting mods. The SMY 180S mod (220W) , Innokin iTaste SVD 2.0. as well as the Clouper T5 (50W) mod. ( I strongly advise against upgrading the Clouper online. There have been other posts in this forum about this).

I have progressed to sub vaping and as a rule will run the Kafun, The Kangartech Aero Tank Turbo, Apsire Atantis, and the Kangartech Sub-Tank. I might add that the Kafun and the Russian Kafun clone are heaps better than the Kangartech Sub-Tank. Why I say this I will not go into in this thread as this is a battery related question.

The Smy 180S runs on three 18650 batteries and I have loaded it with Sony US 18650VTC4 2100 MAH Lithium Ion Battery rated at 30A as these I have been told by the vendors, several are the most powerful for Sub Ohming mods. I run the same in the SVD2 and the Clouper T5. I have tried the Efest IMR 18650 2500 Mah (35A) in all the above mentioned mods. I vape usually, on average no higher than 20W on the SVD 2 and 25W on the other mods.

I would describe myself from my smoking days as a reasonably heavy vaper (in the bad days I would consume a packet of 30 cancer sticks a day)
The best results I could get out of the above mentioned batteries has been about 6-7 hours using the 20-25W settings and a coil resistance of 0.5 ohm on average. My home made coils have varied from 0.8 to 1.0 ohm. I use Japanese Cotton for the wicks.

Can anyone please suggest a decent 18650 Battery with better charge retention?

Do not mention the Ultrafire Black 6000 MaH battery I found these on Ebay and they were total rubbish. They are ok for torch use but definitely a no go for a serious vaper.

Thanks for your help in advance. I am in Oz, so any aussie vendor please help in the first instance. I prefer to shop in Oz and I pay by PayPal.

Acer.

At the resistance of coils you are using, I suggest a high drain IMR (or IMR hybrid) with at least 20 amps continuous discharge rating (not pulse rating). Sony VTC4/5, Samsung 25R, LG18650HE , and some Orbtronics fall into this category.

More mAh (capacity) generally = longer battery time. However, when sub-ohming, adequate continuous amp rating is priority over capacity.

Continuous Discharge Ratings vs Pulse (Burst) Discharge Ratings

The "continuous discharge rating" in amps is the standard specification for amp limits within the battery industry. It is a determination made by the manufacturer and represents the amp limit a battery can be safely used before it will fail.

The "pulse or burst" discharge rating is not a specification standard within the battery industry. Every manufacturer or vendor seems to have their own definition of what the pulse rating is.

A pulse discharge rating is any use above the continuous discharge rating. It is never safe and not within the intended operating parameters of the battery. You should not operate your device above the continuous rating if you can help it. The pulse rating is a condition in which the battery is on basically a buildup to failure. It is exceeding the sustainable and intended discharge rate of the battery. It is inappropriate for a consumer device to operate in the pulse range of its battery.

Which would be why we shouldn't rely on any pulse rating. Any failure, mechanical or electronic, that fires the mod will operate in the 'continuous' mode. If your setup relies on a pulse rating, it's instantly over spec.

If your amp draw is safely in the continuous discharge range, your coil could act almost like a fuse and burn out before the battery is stressed. If you are already running the battery at the edge of it's limits (pulse), there is no margin of safety.

Battery Basics for Mods

I'm not privvy to Aussie vendors, so I can't help you there.

Hey Baditude, first off, your article is GREAT for battery information, it def. has helped me understand what kind of batteries I should be looking for. Second, has this been updated since you posted it? If not, can you do an update?

Really I'm looking for the golden grail of batteries. High mAh, high Amp limit, whether it's IMR or Hybrid, doesn't matter to me, but Li-ion is no good right? Oh yea, I'm getting a iPV Mini 2 (70w). I'm not gonna go near the 70w but I just like having the option to. My sweet spot for Ohms is ~.7-~1.3.

Do you have a suggestion?

I gave my answer to you via PM. (Samsung 25R or LG HE2)

I try to keep my battery blog reasonably updated. There have been some "new" batteries out recently with claims of 35 amps or 40 amps, which I have not included until there is more information about them as being legitimate. Those amp claims are most likely for "pulse" discharge amp ratings and not "continuous" discharge amp ratings. I pay no attention to pulse ratings as they are superfluous. I pay attention only to "continuous" discharge ratings.

Currently, the Samsung 25RmAh (2100 mAh 20 amp) and LG HE2 2100 mAh 20 amp)are the best high capacity (mAh) and moderate amp rated batteries on the market. (The purple Efest 2100mAh 35amp battery is a re-wrapped LG HE2 and really only 20 amps continuous.)

The. B is a 6.8 amp battery. I know many do but I wouldn't use it in a reg mod. Try the panasonic pf

But i had to comment on your ques,t the holy grail you seek doesnt exist yet with more power comes less mah if you need a 30 amp battery you have acouple choices and 5 minutes of vape time isnt going to change your perceptions that much. At that kind of power your going to be changing batteries all the time anyways so whats 10- 20 minutes difference anyways

I've got a ton of what I believe are ultimately LG HE2 2500mAh, but who knows, picked them up at the local B&M. Efest 35A (20A), MXJO 20A, and a mystery red battery that fits the same model, but collects dust as solving the mystery will only happen one way.

Based on your blogs, which i've read about 5 times, I'm thinking the samsung 25Rs are the best for what I do - 40watt max, no more than 10-12A. Looking for safety first now and battery life second for an IPV Mini & IPV3 (with married pair). Will those also work well with say an rDNA40? I saw those shipped with an HE2 included.

illumination supply is sold out, so I was going to place an order with rtd vapor.

Also, illumination supply shows the HE2 with "ICR" in the model - based on your blogs, ICR is explosively bad.

Sorry for the thread hijack, figured this wasn't a new or novel question.

18650 LG 18650HE2 2500mAh High Discharge Flat Top - Batteries - Batteries, Chargers, and PowerPax Carriers.

Most manufacturers of the high wattage vaporizers recommend at least a 12 amps continuous high drain battery. Therefore the Samsung 25R and LG 18650HE batteries both fall into this category with 20 amps continuous.

I'm not sure why Illumination Supply puts "ICR" in with the model number for the LG HE2. It is an IMR/hybrid battery, not an ICR (or protected Li-Ion) battery.
